The town of Nelson In British Columbia has not been afraid to venture Into the field of municipal ownership, and the first results are of a most encouraging nature. According to one of the local papers, the town or, as they prefer to call It. the city paid $5.00 for the water works system In 1897, spent $101,680 on Improvements, collected $64,639 In water rates at an operating expense of $9,l.. After provid ing for all the charges, the people of Nel son are $18,966 in pocket through owning thej waterworks service, and,. $23,676 ahead through owning their electric light service; since 18.97. The town waa Incor porated that year, and the electric light and waterworks, taken over by the munici pality, and these two services since then have profited the municipality to the ag gregate of $42,043. The rates have not been raised, to the public, the services have been good, and the town has received the profits that would have gone Into private pockets. Toronto (Can.) Star, i NEVER TOUCHED HIM. ALDINA THOUSANDS OF NEW HOMES The East Side Undergoes Building Boom. FACTORIES AND WAREHOUSES New Woolen Miils, Sawmills and Other Enterprises Added. The advent of the wintry season does not seem to have affected the erection of new structures on the East 8lde. Every day new dwellings and business houses are being started. Old ones are under going much-needed repairs and the whole section of the city la being remodeled. The past year haa been one of unusual activity in the building of factories and warehouses. Several new large ware houses are projected if the oil district ordinance Is thrown out. During the past year the Btudebnker Brothers have completed the erection of a large four story warehouse, corner Easl Second und East Morrison and Belmont streets, Across the street on Belmont the Advance Thresher Company has Just completed its new warerooma. Next to the Btudcbaker Brothers' establishment on Belmont street another storeroom has been erect ed by the Buffalo Pitta Company. All of these establishments do a business when aggregated together of at least a million dollars a year. BI.RNEP DISTRICT RKPLACICD. The evidence of the Ore at the Phoenix Iron Works, which destroyed nearly $100, 000 worth of property early last summer. Is swiftly disappearing under the magic spell of a large force of carpenters, brick layers .and architects. The two brick structures owned by Dr. I). The Ore gon Water Power & Railway Company is replacing the small warehouse and dock destroyed by the fire, by a monster freight depot and a wharf extending from Hu thorne avenue to Inmun. InGermanyadiscusslon has started urg ing that German children drop the, words 'mamma" and "papa" In favor of "mut ter" (miither) and "vater" (fath.-r). "How." say they, "can anybody prefer the unmeaning 'mamma' to the deep and Impressive 'mutter?' Nothing can replace for" a OerrnHn- -the word 'niullcr.' cer talnly not the French 'mamma.' A cer tain philologist, however, usk? how it can be suggested that the word 'mamma' Is derived from the French, seeing that It Is probably to be found in all lan ruaaes of the world. In the numerous "dialects" "of ATrtea "and m fndts The -ronrf- for mother Is 'mamma, which is glvep aa a title of honor to every elderly dame deserving of esteem and respect 'Mam ma' and 'papa (baba) .are-so -generally used In all parta of the world that they probably date back some thouhanda Of year.
