Mr. Ralph Fisher, the famous captain of Stanford's team last year, has been engaged as a perma nent member of the faculty and Incident ally to coach the cadets In athletics of all kinds. ., He has already started to put the boys through a course of sports that will en able them to hold their own with teams of larger experience. The first game of the season was played last Saturday with the Dental College, and contrary to expectation the cadota beat the visitors I to 0. Next Saturday the cadets play the Columbia University at 2 O'clock on the University grounds. The manager has been arranging matches with the H. M. A., P. A., P. B. and Captain, E. Smith. PORTLAND ACADEMY. The past week has seen the Portland Academy luds rapidly rounding Into con dition for their coming gumes. They were disappointed In not being able to secure a game last Saturday, but expect to have one every week from now on. Next Saturday they will probably go to Chemawa and play the strong Indian team. The Saturday following they will play the Hill Military Academy team the first of a series of two best out ,of three games. Saturday, November l, they win go to Albapy to play the Albany College. After that comes the second game with Hill Military, and the game with the High school on November 15 In the meantime grumes will be Dluved durffig ' he ""week' with" 'the ifedlcaT and Dental College teams. This schedule makes it evident that the boys are not afraid of work, and that they are willing to meet all teams that are thought to be anywhere near the academy team's class. Tliey have their work cut out and no one who has seen them practice doubts that they will give a good account of them selves. The squad has been greatly strengthened of-late by the addition of several new players who give promise of making the team stronger. FOOALL. Whitman CollegVfdotball team will ar rive In the city Friday morning and rest one day before their contest with Mult nomah on Saturday. Both teams aro very -fast in play and re confident of winning. Whitman defeated Forest Grove in two short halves by a score of 28 to 0. This proves they are playing very fast ball. The Multnomah team have not lined up once this season and will likely be weak on defensive work. The various bast-ball leagues through out the country have finished the work of the year, wltH the exception of the California league. The close of the 29th season of the Na tional League left Pittsburg In the lead by great odds. They carried away the pennant without an effort At the open ing of the season they had their team In the best of form and practically won the battle before the qr teams were suffi ciently' organized toTLaV'-gt)()d" ball: TBey made a remarkable record, taking 108 games out of 139. This Is winning nearly on the basis of three out of every four games played. Brooklyn was second and came within 28 games of the leaders. New Yorlcwas the cellar team and only se cured 48 games and lost 88. The difference In the games between the winners and losers is 65. WESTERN LEAGUE. Kansas City in the last few games forged to the front and won out over Omaha by three points. "Bt Paul was a" close third and was only three points be hind Omaha. Denver was a close fourth. The other four teams were In a division by themselves and far down the line. Peoria was at the foot and made a miser able showing of only irthninf one game out of every four played. Results: Five-eighths of a mile dash L'lctlna won, Aunt Mary second, undergrowth third: time, 1:04. The 64-furlong dash was won by Miss Madeline in the fast time of 1:23, Sailor second, Alarla third.
