The French bark Eugefle Schneider will tie down early next week to load a huge cargo of big square timbers : at the docks of the Hammond Lum ber Company, for European delivery. Bay points during the afternoon, with a fair cargo of general merchandise. The bar rag Wallula will blow down her boilers today, and the Tatoosh will go into commission for a few days in her place and stead. The French ship Rene Kerviler got away over the bar yesterday morning and laid her course for Sydney Heads, Australia, for orders The American barkentine Wrestler has been chartered to load lumber out of the Columbia for South American delivery. The Breakwater made her usuaf passage down and out for the Coos country yesterday morning. The steamer Eureka was among the getaways for the California coast yes terday.' HIT HOUSE TENDERS mi sm II LETTER FROM SENATOR FUL TON SAYS THERE IS NO FEAR OF REMOVAL. The fear that the lighthouse head quarters would be removed from the mouth of the Columbia river to Bel- lingham Bay turns out to have beeu quite groundless, according to a let ter received by Mr. Whyte, manager of the Chamber of Commerce, yester day, from Senator Fulton. Mr. Ful ton says: "Referring again to the matter of the reported movement to have head quarters of the lighthouse district re moved from the Columbia River to Bellinghara Bay, I find that it a'l arose out of resolutions adopted by the Bellingham Chamber of Com merce asking that it be done. There is no disposition whatever on the part of the authorities here to make any change, as they say the Columbia Riv er is near the center of the district. The proposition to create an extra district is one that has been recom mended by the lighthouse board for several years and it arises out of a desire to have authority to create an additional district with a view ,o placing Alaska in a district by itse'f. That would have no influence in the matter of the location of the head quarters of the existing district." The oil tank steamer Asuncion arr rived in from the California coast yesterday morning, and proceeded on tip the river after a short stay in this port The steamer Shoshone arrived down at the Callender dock yesterday afternoon, laden with an immense cargo of ties, and left down and out later in the day, Saa Francisco bound. A French bark, whose name has not been ascertained, has been reported .is off Gray's Harbor, in distress. It is thought she was from the Sound, and lumber laden for the Antipodes. The steam schooner Washington which has been in the boneyard at Portland for some months past is to resume her run between the Bay City and the Rose City. . Baptist Rev. F. C W. Parker, correspond ing secretary and general missionary of the Oregon Baptist convention, will preach at the Baptist church at both morning and evening services next Sunday. LEMAN'S, Dec. 31-Wilbur Wright made another long flight yesterday re maining in the air for one hour, 52 minutes and 40 seconds and covering a distance of 60 miles. Waterman'e ' The basketball game last night, in Athletic Club gymnasium between girls of the High School attracted goodly number of spectators, and was interesting from start to finish. The contest was between combination teams the Seniors-Freshman against the Sophomore-Juniors, and the Soph-Tuns won by the rather over whelming score of 34 to 10. This was the third game between th two teams, and each time the Sophomore-Junior girls have won the victory. The girls are beginning to show quite a little skill under the coaching of Principal Imel, and during the year there has been a marked development in High School athletics. Miss Lennah Parker, who playe'l guard for the S-J's, was perhaps the star of the evening, and she aided ma terialiy in piling up the score for her side. On Tuesday evening the Norwegian and Danish Methodist Church was crowded to overflowing by the always interested populace of the east end of the city. Every available seat and all standing room being occupied members of the Sunday school, their friends and elders, who had come to enjoy the celebrating of the birth of Christ. The decorations were said to have been without doubt the most elabo rate and spectacular of anything y shown in the city. In the center of the platform was a large tree over which was built a platform in the shape of a gambrel room. On the center of this arch or platform there had been placed a large candlestick, lavishly decorated, and made by Al bert Carlson, and perhaps intended to represent the Biblical seven golden candlesticks, only that this one would hold 15 large candles. On each side of this candlestick was placed three small trees, each one independently decorated in tinsel, garlands, popcorn and the customary silvery and golden little things that make green spruce trees so attractive at Christmas time The program of the Sunday school was well rendered, especially the sing ing of the whole school, thanks be to L. A. Larson's untiring patience training and teaching the children the beautiful Christmas songs. The church choir favored the udience with two selections entitled "Hoeslanna" and "Lovesanger." The male choir also sang, "Nearer, My God, to Thee," to a tune composed by L. A. Larson, The old custom of distributing pres. ents of intrinsic value to the Sunday school boys and girls has been discon tinued, but they had not been forgot ten as every member of the school received a little booklet containing name of school, etc., that all who might care to do so will have some' thing whereby they can remember the school and the Christmas .festivities of 1908, PERSONAL MENTION I!-IIII 685 Commercial St. Peter Sater of Bellingham, Wash!, is in the city, a guest at the home of his sister, Mrs. M. He was a guest of the Merwyn. 'H. D. Grant of Ashland spent the day here yesterday on business mat ters returning up the road last night on the 6:10 train. R. E. Goldcrsleeve of New York was one of the many business visitors noted in Astoria yesterday. C. G. Ballington of Spokane spent the afternoon here yesterday. J. K. Browne, a merchant of Boise, was doing business here yesterday for a few hours. T. D. Douglas of Sacramento, was noted among the interested tourists in this city yesterday. He was domi ciled at the Northern. C, J.
