;in the matter of the legal sterilization
of all manner of human perverts and
weaklings; and it is peculiarly valu
able testimony since it comes from
one of the very best of Astoria's good
women, one who, daring to think,
dares to declare her conclusions for
the good of humanity. It reads as
follows:
"Editor of the Morning Astorian; -
Dear Sir: I, as a reader of your valu
able paper, was greatly pleased to sec
the fearless way in which you, with
terse and graphic editorial comment,
recently published the communication
of Dr. Owens-Adair, and in which
yoa proclaimed your advocacy of thi
betterment of human society along
the lines prescribed by her.
"Now in regard to this law of her
edity of which Dr. Adair speaks and
seeks to make good upon, we know
that the 'sins of the father are visile j
upon the children from generation to
generation and remain with us inter
minaDly, wnne we do Out little, In a
scinetific and logical way, to minimize
and banish them; and actually foster
them instead, by too slavish a devo
tion to tradition and custom.
"All of our public institutions, a"sy
lums, penitentarics, reformatories, are
literally menaces to human advance
ment, when looked upon from a hu
manitarian standpoint; and this fact
of itself is one of the stoutest pleas
that may be offered for Dr. Adair's
proposed route to human freedom.
None of these blasting ills are new;
they are old as time itself. The poor
human entity can only break itself
against the solid law of moral nature,
and so we must revert to the laws of
men wise in their generation for the
only relief, which, in the larger sense,
is available. Therefore, why not try
this certain expedient? It is always
well to face the truth, especially when
we are on the quest of world-wide
good such as is bound up in this tre
mendous problem. And think of the
ever accumulating burdens of taxation
involved in the useless ourses we
have pursued to relieve and protect
the helpless and the vicious.
'The world is peopled with criminals
who are daily committing kleplo
manical thefts, suicides, murders in
round about ways, adulteries, lying,

Everybody Seems to be Awake to the Advantage of Early
Shopping.
With the largest and most varied assortment of holiday goods we
have ever presented; with prices as low as can be offered on things
of such ideal quality, the search for proper gifts and needed mer
chandise appropriate to the glad season can profitably and satisfac
torily begin and end hare. We cannot urge too strongly the import
ance of immediate shopping. Ample as our stocks are, perfect and
complete as is our organization of salespeople, the rush of the last
day choosers is sure to deplete assortments and render service less
prompt and satisfactory. Now all our lines are intact and promi
nently displayed, and service is at the very maximum of excellence.
Plenty of room for inspection, plenty of time for the showing of
things, and the fullest scope is offered for choice. Everything to be
gained by shopping NOW -much to be lost by delaying.
