THE MORNING ASTORiAN, ASTORIA. OltKGON. FRIDAY, DECEMBER IS, 1308 IEEE ELEVEH Wulfc- Fifty 03 GHRiSTOAS KSVERTHELESS HIGH SCHOOL . WILL HAVE A GAME OH ' NEW YEAR'S DAY. ; A telegram from the Eugene foot kill eleven yesterday stated that they could not toiue to Astoria on Christ tnas day for the long expected game with the Astoria High School team. The Message, was to Lawrence Rog ers, manager of the local eleven, ari l Siially sets aside all possibility of the game Eugene ' defeated the Astom fcoys in October, and the local play ers have been very anxious for the promised return game on Christmas itj, as they felt confident that they would wiu handily enough. The game it Eugene was a hard fought one, and really ought to have been won by the Astoria plsjers. Shortly after the game was played a citizen of Eugene, Morris Jcssup Duryea, evi dently having been greatly impressed ty the playing of the Astoria boys, jeot the following tetter to Principal Intel of the Astoria High School, so tomplimentar) in its nature that it i well worth publishing: "Will yon permit me. a citizen of Eugene, to congratulate you on the showing made by the Astoria High School football ; team in the game with onr High School team today. , "While I am glad our boys won the game, as a matter of local pride, I am. still more glad that it was won from such worthy opponents as your Soys proved to be, I have seen a good many football games, in all sec tions of this country, and I never saw a gamier straggle than 'your boys jmt sp. It was a manly exhibition of grit and courage, and Astoria High weight ! proud of the fellows who so gamely today lor hor i honor and glory. Time and ' time .K.in men who were ready to drop from sheer exhaustion and pain, ral-' lied and fought fiercely in every Stfimniage, fighting against the heavy 'i9 of a wet field and a much heavier team, ft is of such stuff real men are made of, the men of dogged perseverance, who win lifes battle, the men who make such a defeat, like todays, a moral victory. "Astoria High School has every reason to be proud of the boys who represented her in today's game, and I congratulate her and them." This letter is really a remarkable one, remarkable for its free and generously frank congratulations and for the fine spirit " that animates it. It should long b remembered by the football players of the local school, for it is not every team that can win such high commendation from a citiien of another town. While there .will be no game on Christmas day, there nevertheless will be one on New Year's. On that day the Astorian "Beavers'com posed of a eleven of Clatsop county young men who attend the Agricul ture College at Corvallis, will meet the High School eleven. It seems that it is the custom of the students at the 0. A. C to form elevens out of the men from each county, and it is said that Clatsops eleven at the O A. C. has won the championship in their, inter-county contests. The eleven has done quite a bit of playing, and should be in fine fettle to meet the Astoria High. Among the 'Bea vers will be Walter Keck, of Hani' mond, captain and coach. He is thj fullback of the O. Al C college team, and while only 18 years of age, al ready 'has won the reputation of being one of the best players in the northwest He weighs 180 pounds stripped, and it should wake some of the High School boys tip to ran up against him with his skill and his iiintnm1fitMt1MHmtMHn))MMM(MtMMI BATISFA CTION ! Kearney, re-elected super intendent of streets, yesterday filed i his account of his election expenses during the municipal campaign, show ing that his expenses were $2.75 for cards and $2.75 for "refreshments, solid and liquid," making a total o $5.25. The "Corrupt Practice act," the law which has caused so much comment ever since it was adopted, has some stringent regulations in regard to filing these accounts, with a heavy penalty for non-compliance, and it' may be of interest to publish the sec tion in part: "Every candidate for nomination or electiusi to public office . . . within fifteen dnf after the elec tion . . , shall file . . . an itemized . sworn statement setting forth in detail all the moneys contrib uted, expended or promised by him to aid and promote his nomination or election, or both, as the case may be, and for the election of his party can didates . . . ' Any candidate who shall fail to file such a statement shall be fined $25 for every day in which he was in default, unless ' he shall be excused by the court." It also provides that every candi date who did not expend anything shall also file a similar statement under the same penalty. At the ex piration of the fifteen days it be comes the duty of the city auditor (in this case) to notify the district fl0a ,y the thrown clubs or "kenW- attorney of the failure so to do, and ! la still rwlnr Improved upon to boom- within ten days thereafter the dis- j eranga, bows and arrowt, crosabowa trict attorney shall proceed to prose-1 apd rearrog- , . . ; cute," etc. ' " ' Thus it would appear to be the i ' ..
