This U our sjogaa, nowl , The new year must mean more ta Astoria than any of her hundred years and it is up to ns all to make it the best ever. There is no political impediment to confuse, annoy, distract; for, nearly two years to come we have nothing to think of but business and com merce and general up lift and that will keep us going some. No man knows what a day may bring forth in a business way, nor who will turn the propitious trick for himself and the city and section, nor on what basis the development will hinge, lumber, fish, dairying, small manufactures, shipping, grain, mills, or what not. But we do know that Astoria cannot stand still any longer; that she must save her own situation and secure her own future, using every resource she possesses and un fold others.,. The hour is our own, the inspiration should be ours, the achievement of something more and better than we have now on record, mast be ours. . . ,. Let's get to it! . The president favor four new bat tleships. It will not be the fault of Mr. Roosevelt if the Taft administra tion is troubled with anything in the nature of naval unpreparedness.' Taft's plurality in Massachusetts is 110,423. The Socialists expected largeN increase in the state, but Ilis gen, though a resident of Massachu setts, received there only 19.237 votes. Colonel Bryan is said to have pur chased a big tract of land in Texas to be devoted to the growth of all kinds of fruit An exception will be made in the case of lemons, which come to him naturally. Bryan's plurality in Oklahoma has settled down to 11,800. Th Repub licans in the new state should reach for it at the next trial vigorously and confidently, and proceed at once to organize thoroughly. Each year buudreda of pitchers claim attentlou of the world, and each year they are promptly forgotten. But I1U nols produced a than who, althotiKb now years deceased, has a brighter nam than any of the great multitude. In the great campaign of 1SS4, when the rrovtdence club, then a member of the National league, was fighting a bit ter gam with Philadelphia, a catastro phe occurred that seemingly would disrupt Its chances of winning the pen nant. A player named Sweeney, who was pitching, was ordered to go Into right Held to chang place with "Cyclone- Miller. At that time It waa not permissible to take a pitcher out of the game. Whereupon Sweeney promptly walked out of the game, leaving the team with only eight men and with on pitcher, Charles Kadnourne. Two men tried to cover the field, with the result that rrovldence was completely snowed under. A meeting of the directors was held to decide whether or not the club should be dis banded. Certainly a professional team waa never iu a sorrier plight Badbouroe was approached and the proposition put to him. "I can win It all right" said be quietly and In a matter of fact tone. And then followed the most remark able battle for a pennant that the world has ever seen. . Radbourne es tablished a record that has never been equaled, one that will live when more xpenslve contests will have been blissfully forgotten. Of twenty-seven consecutive game Radbourne - won twenty-six. In four game with Boa ton be had three shutouts, only on ran was scored and only seventeen hits were made.. This defeat waa suf fered at the hand of Buffalo by a score of 2 to 0, and even then only five hit were made off htm, showing that the defeat was not due to poor pitching. Needless to say, Providence won the pennant or, rather. Bad bourne won the pennant But the great player had to pay the price. No arm could stand the awful strain without great agony. Morning after morning when Radbourne arose he could not lift his arm as high aa his waist He had to brush his hair with his left band. But he did not give up the game. He would slip out to tfie park about two hours before the rest of the team put In an ap pearance and would begin the excru elating process of limbering up. He would pitch the ball only a few feet when he would first go out but he would keep on trying time after time. rubbing his arm with his left hand. i Tl ; . e n i . i r.j. ...... . .l . ivimumi on u. uunus r n ,j . .... ! There are certain sharp economies to be practiced in this city of ours during the next year or two; not radical, . nor crippling, nor diffuse; but genuine and , business-like and helpful The city has reached a pass, as to noculation, commercial influ ence and significance, where sudden and widespread reduction of her ex penditures would insure a worse re sult even than , sheer extravagance; bat there are many lines, department al and otherwise, that may be mini mized in cost for a few years to the immense good of her civic credit, and yet not, dwarf nor thwart her prog ress and her best interests.
