Even with the loss of the head of the ticket the Republicans of Astoria may arrogate to themselves a very pronounced victory in the general outcome of yesterday's election. Th defeat of Mr. Elmore is particular! deplorable in view of the election o the majority of the Council, and ye the attainment of the Council goes long way toward compensation, in that Mr. Smith will have to face an unpliabl and unbossable group of civic issociates who will not need, and will not obey, his dictation, at any point of their service. The elimination of certain con spicuously reckless legislators clears the field for the application of essen tial economies and reconstructive policies, whereby the city may be saved from a crisis in the gravest of all her relations, her finances. And there is, perhaps, further elimination to be effected by a legal recount in certain directions, notably in the fourth precinct, ward 2. But, be that as it may, the situation evolved is satisfactory as far as it goes and Astoria will be governed by a Council amenable to the law that means res ervation and preservation of the rev cnues and assets and 'guards her against further exploitation. The dread of the seawall grab is wiped out That stalling and stalk ing nightmare is removed; and the establishment of the Port of Astoria assured. The city's condition is im mensely improved by the election of the men for whom the Astorian and all good Republicans have labored, and what of reproach may attach to those Republicans who forgot their duty, or wilfully neglected it may be passed to the limbo of things ignored even if they art not forgotten. The day is practically and deservedly our and the best demonstration of this comfortable truth is yet to be made rght in the Council chambers of this city. On either estimate, however, these pur chases will have a stimulating effect upon the market. As compared with the whole output, the amount is not large, but coming as it does at a time when other commercial de mands are getting stronger, it will help the trade to a considerable amount The lumber industry of this state has been severely handicapped for a long time past, the trouble antedat ing by several months the nnanciil disturbance which culminated rather more-than a year ago. As it is the leading industry of the state, a de pression in the lumber industry necessarily affects all others. The healthful reaction which has set in is one of the most gratifying features of a largely improved busi ness outlook. Moreover, the mere fact that the railroads are purchas ing heavily of lumber is itself an evidence of increased confidence. faith in the future and improved business conditions. Seattle P. I. ed. "At the present rate the forests are consumed three times as fast a they can be replaced by natural growth and worse than that, for a common method of lumbering leave the land denuded and unable to re forest itself. "In the last 10 years 243 firm re tired from the business of manufac Hiring lumber because of their in ability to secure a supply. The last heedless scramble may take place in the northwest, but, it is to be hoped that the conservation movement will find a means of preventing it. "Properly handled, the forests that remain will more than reproduce themselves, at the same time allow ing a production of lumber, with less wasteful methods, fully equal to the country's needs. The immediate pro fits will be less, but the lumber in dustry will be made permanent. A few years of delay, however, will prove disastrous." Missoulian. Two of our worthy citizens, whom, for the reason that we do not want to bp personal, we will call Smith and Jones, had a wordy contest on the street the other day. Smith is very proud of his wisdom in management of his affairs on the farm in keeping everything up-to-date, and he never tires of telling hi friends about it. Yesterday he met Jones and began to indulge in his fa vorite topic. His neighbour Jones cut him short and took him by surprise by saying, "See here, Smith, you mrfkc me very tired. You are continually bragging about your good business management and judgment, but 1 think you are the worst manager and have the poorest judgment of any man I know of." Before he could recover from his surprise. Jones continued: "You are continually bragging about keeping everything up-to-date. I just advise you some day to go into your kitchen and take a look at that old rack of a stove your wife is using. It is burning twice the fuel necessary, and is wearing out her life and nerves trying to get along with something that belongs to the 18th century. You kick when your meals are not ready, or because the bread and bis cuits are burned, but if you wouH just let a little of your good business economy and fine management you talk about reach to your kitchen, you would buy one of those latest South Bend Malleables. I will bet you a new hat, Smith, you would not talk to me any more about a disordered stomach or late dinners and such like, and you would find your wife would have a smile that would never come off, the genuine Malleable South Bend smile. "I would advise you to take in th exhibit at Foard & Stokes Hardware Company. The South Bend man is there and will tell you more about his range In five minutes that I could in an hour. It'sNill right, Smith, take my word for it. If you are good, they will give you some of their hot bis cuits and coffee and a beautiful little cook book and useful souvenir to take home to your wife."
