OCEAN, BAR, BAY, DOCK AND RIVER The Xorth German liny training ship Hergozin Sophie CitvJott, was hauled from her anchnruge off the Tongue to a berth alongside the O. R. ti N. piers, where she took on stores and water. Captain Glund yesterday received his orders for the continuance of his voyage, anl they direct him to proceed hence to Port Phillip's Head, on the Austral ian coast, where he will receive final orders as to where to load wheat for Europe. She will probably take the stream again this morning, and leave out on her long 6000 mile voyage to morrow morning. The ship was the cynosure of thousands of interested eyes yesterday, having been thrown open to the public Ladies and gen tlemen swarmed on board, and tin der the courteous guidance of her. officers and cadets, saw everything of interest from stem to stern. She is a beautiful vessel and kept up to the highest standards of utility and cleanliness. The" very "pink of con dition" covers the situation exactly. She has everything to make her offi cers and . men happy and, contented. including a fine ship's library of 6000 volumes, a fine band of 28 pieces, a splendid galley and a long list of dietary articles, bath rooms, and all manner of accessories. She is one of a tremendous fleet owned by her company, which compises 163 huge steamships, of which the Kaiser Wil helm der Gross is, or should be, the flagship; 67 coasting steamers, on the China coast; 170 huge river lighters; 50 steam tugs, and two training ship, the other one being the "Her login Cecelia." The officers and ca dets of the ship, including everyone on board, has been on shore, and the people of Astoria have received them cordially at all points socially and commercially, and are exceedingly glad they came, and what is more, hate to see them leave. They are a fine, frank, pleasant group of people and a credit to the profession they stand for. ASTORIA ELEVEN MEET SOLDIERS TODAY EIGHT OF LAST YEAR'S TEAM IN LOCAL LINE-UP AND GOOD GAME PROMISED The French bark General Fair herbes left out for Europe on the tow lines of the Wallula yesterday morning. The Astoria Athletic Club football eleven will play a team from Fort Stevens on the grounds up on the heights at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon, and a good game is promised. The soldiers should be in excellent trim, as they have a ficst class' coach in Lieutenant Farnsworth, an old football man, and in addition they nave a Dig erowa ot men to choose from. ine Astoria Athletic Club team, as they ., designate themselves, is mostly made up of last year's eleven and contains some good material, mi ... . iney nave oeen practicing only a week or so, and most of their work has been in-doors, but because of the fact that a majority of them have played together before it is expected they will be in fairly good shape for today's game. The local team has the weight, and ought to put up a stiff game. Eight of last year's players will be seen in the Astorian line-up today, which is as follows: Center, L. Johanson; right guard, T. Larson; left sruard. L. Gramm.-: right tackle, L. Carlson; left tackle, S. Johanson; right end, H. Larson; levft end, N. Jeldness; quarterback, Geo. Holmes; left half, J. Bays, man ager; right half, H. Graham; full back, R. Graham, captain. The game will be called promptly at 3:30 o clock. An admission fee will be charged. The French bark Bossuet, Captain Jamet, 79 days from Newcastle, N. S. W., entered port yesterday and is in the lower harbor awaiting towage to trie metropolis. F. Meyers and W. R. Allea By a score of 12 to 6 the Astoria High school, eleven defeated the rortland Academy team on the Ath letic grounds yesterday afternoon This is the second defeat the Port land eleven has met at the hands of the Astoria boys this season. ' the first score having been 11 to 4. It was the first game of the sea son on the home grounds and those who saw the event sued up the High school team as containing the ma terial for a likely team. Some of the plays were brilliant, though on the other hand there were plays and oc casions when things didn't go well. In the first half the Astoria eleven had things all their own way. Though lighter, they simply walked through the lines of the Portland Academy eleven. In this first half thf local team was seen at its best. They outplayed and out gencralled the visitors at every turn, and, most surprising of all, kept breaking through their defenses with methodi cal regularity. While away on their trip in the valley the Astoria eleven won a reputation for grit and that up and doing courage that counts in a football game, and during this first half they showed quite a bit of this. The faster the home team played the better work they seemed to do. Some of the individual work was very good, while the team work seemed of the very best. When the first half ended the As toria High had 12 to its credit and the visitors had nothing, At the opening of the second half the visitors showed at once that they had something up their sleeves. They went at it like tigers. Besides, it looked as if the Astoria boys came out weaker than when they went in. Right at the commencement of the second half the local boys drove the ball down near the goal, and the spectators looked for a repetition of the tactics of the first half, but the Portland boys "fooled" them. TT A rTC Frm this time it looked as if the Portland boys would score and in a moment they did. The remainder of the game was see-saw work from one end of the field to the other, with each side getting into bad hole many times and getting out of them by sheer tuck or flukes. It was quite plain that the Portland boys were teaching their opponents a whole some respect for their grit, too, and the locals no longer seemed to break through their lines at will. All m all the game was a good one There was enough open work and running with or kicking the ball to make it interesting to the specta tors, while things moved fast enough to keep everyone on the alert. , The comoletion of the new United There were no serious injuries, Wifeless Telceraoh station at- Marsh- tnougn several ot the players were fieIdi on FridaV( the, i3th jnstant, in KnocKea out temporarily, ana one ot upifed Mayor E.
