During the past six months the fires are said to have been unusu ally active and the luva roue to within fifty feet of the top, forming a lake estimated at seventeen acres in ex tent. When I saw it the lake had dropped back probably three hundred feet, but I cannot imagine any more wonderful display under any other condition, The pit had begun to till again when I first viewed It; and sometimes as many as a do$en fire fountains would be playing at one time from various parts of the sur face of the lake. Then an accumula tion of gasci would suddenly explode beneath the surface, and the whole lake would be thrown into violent commotion, like some huge cauldron boiling furiously. The appearance is constantly chang ing. The surface cools within a few minutes after it comes in contact with the air, and forms a 'nrk brown crust over the molten surface. WILL J. COOPER. Why Colds Are Dangerous. Because you have contracted ordi nary colds and recovered from them without treatment of any kind, do not for a moment imagine that colds are not dangerous. Everyone knows that pneumonia and chronic catarrh have their origin in a common cold. Consumption is not caused by a cold but the cold prepares the system for the reception and development of the germs that would not otherwise have found lodgment.
