Much of the material is on the ground and presents a business like appear ance and an assurance that the com pany proposes to fulfil its promises of a new station building at an early day. This is gratifying and. win oe much appreciated by the people of Astoria. Squirting It On A gang of men belonging to me O. No Instructions Yet Inquiry at the Astoria postotnee elicits the fact that no instructions have been received there as to the reported new ruling of the depart ment in relation to mutilated stamps, and their refusal by the postal au thorities, save as they have always existed. Deputy Postmaster Heil born does not know of the issuance of such order, though it may have been made and not yet reached this ottice. So he was unable to say whether the Government intended to redeem mu- tilatd stamps where they were no, wantonly torn or defaced. Business And Pleasure- Messrs. John H. and A. M. Smit the well known brothers and attor leys of this city, left up for Portland last evening on the 6:10 express, arm ed with an odd admixture of law hooks and hunting paraphernalia. They will stop in the metropolis for today, to try a case in the federal rnnrt. and at the earliest moment nossible will leave there for their old home up the Williamette Valley, to hunt pheasants for the balance of the i week. They expect to be back by Monday, but have made no promises as to the distribution of the game they will bring home, which may be just as well, considering the wmc range of friends amenable to supply here. reauired. The prevailing idea is that the long causeway may be carefully and adequately repaired by cutting ot! the piling at low-water mark, ami building it up on new brents, with bracing to - match, and that new piling is not requisite at this time. There is always the question whether floating timbers knock out such new work- as this super-struc tural building, and if it is best to limit tn the full re-euuiohicnt of the route, as the council proposes; and all sides and bearings will be given due, personal attention and weight at the conference and examination that will be held and made today. If the simoler and cheaper process will do, the owners will ask an abatement of the order and design; if not, they will take what further steps are es sential in-case.
