THE WEATHER Oregon, Washington and Idaho Fair and warmer, except near the coast TAFT IS RIGHT. The statement made recently Hot Springs, Arkansas, by Hon. Wil liam H. Taft, that "there is no class of the American electorate the voters of which could be. or would be, de livered by its- leaders" is one that appeals to the pride and honesty of every group in the country. The day of that sort of political leadership is fast waning in this country, to its very distinct credit and betterment. There has been a wonderful evolu tion in the manner of disposing local and general politics throughout the United States in the past few years; a publicity, a fearless and masterful system of man-handling, a popular and justifiable grilling, and the intro duction of popular legislation circum scribing the rabid force and trend of political action on the part of leaders that has diminished, and to a great extent, nullified, the influence and power of the old-time boss; he is fast becoming a back-number, and if the country owes nothing else to the alleged "muck-raker" it does owe him largely for the impetus he has givn in this behalf, a plea and course of political redemption that was pro found needed. fcAnd the ene invin cible proof of the efficacy of this work of exposure and readjustment, lies in the ' co-ordinate statement ' of the great Republican candidate, that "the National Republican Committee will accept no contributions from corpo rations," which is acentuated by a similar declaration from Democratic headquarters. There is measureable comfort in these conclusions for the ordinary voter of the land; it is a good thing to know that the lordliest gift in the possession of a free people is com paratively safe from the gross and stultifying touch of the Harpies and peddlers of politics and that the con servation of the boon is being forced to perpetuation at the hands of the men who stand pre-eminently at the head of public thought and expres sion, Taft, and Bryan. Unhappily, Oregon has much to do in recouping from the incubus and disparagement to which she has sunk from this very cause and the sooner her people seek to realize upon the freer and cleaner doctrine of political thought and action the better for the State in a thousand ways. We must set up the better standards if we would enjoy the benefits that innure from them; and own, AVER IT WAS PAID Money Was Given for Roosevelt Campaign Fund In 1904 ODD TALE FROM GUATEMALA own company and plant, operate and control it. It is well to be on guard against all irresponsible overtures from un known people. We know what we want, and knowing and wanting, are qualified to say what it shall be, who shall supply it, what it shall cost, and at upon what terms of franchise and equipment it shall proceed; with this leeway of prestige it is sheer folly to tiouj, tej accept overtures trom people utterly unknown and barren of unimpeach able references. . The Common Council , and the Chamber of Commerce acting togeth er, with the consent of the business men of Astoria, are qualified to re lieve a very unpleasant situation, and do it without committing the public to the uninvited interest of people from the outside whose sole concern in the case is on a par with that of the company that has wrought the very complexities that confronts us at this time, to graft the people. The markets reflect the idea that a nominee who has lost twice will be apt to get even a harder jolt the third time. "Guffey was not beaten in Penn sylvania," says a paper in that state. Mr. Guffey's error was in not real izing that there is in Lincoln, Neb., a party supreme judge entirely un hampered by state lines. Out of the Revolutionary Troubles Now Brew ing In Central American States. MEXICO CITY, July . .-".Emigradoes" and political exiles from the Republic of Guatemala and Salvador who for some time have taken up an enforced residence hi this capital are a unit in declaring that Dr. Herman Prowe told the truth regarding Presi dent Estrada Cabrera's contribution to the republican campaign fund of 1904. More than a dozen of them have been interviewed and most of them express surprise when it was said that Dr. Prowe's statement was They declare that the pay ment of the money to the American minister was more or less of an open secret and whether the Republican campaign manager or the officers of the present administration know any thing of the matter or not Estrada Cabrera does not forget it, for the promised support from them did not come, mis, tncy claim, was demon strated within the past fortnight by the presence of the criser Albany at the Pacific Honduran port of Puerto Cortez. The emigradoes, who meet here at frequent intervals, claim to have received advices from what they characterize as an authoritative source to the effect that Cabrera after in veigling to his support President Fi gueroa started the revolution in Hon duras for the purpose of drawing President Zelaya into the conflict and then overthrowing both him and JJa vila. Cabrera wis to name their suc cessors and thus become master of Central America in fact. As an ar gument to win over President declared that Cabrera answered that an agreement between that country and the United State existed by the terms of which Mexico agreed to (al low the lead of the United Stales pertaining, to Ceiftral America in gen eral and Guatemala in particular. The only discrepancies in the storie told by the emigradoes were regarding the amount of the alleged contribu tion to the Roosevelt campaign fund. Some of tlienj maintained that the do nation was $5,000 instead of $10,000 as reported by Dr. Prowe. It Can't Be Beat The best of all teachers is exper ience. C. M.
