THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OREGON. FRIDAY, JULY 10, 008. i J S ARMY AEROPLANES Israel Ludlow Will Build Flying Machine New KILL TRY TO RAISE FUNDS Is Confident That His Ides of An Aeroplane is Far Superior to Either ef the Wrights or the Herring Machines. NEW YORK, July 9,-Israel Lud low, a young lawyer of New York who was permanently crippled in a accident with a flying machine two years ago, returned yesterday from Washington where he has been con ducting experiments for several months determined to raise sufficient funds- to construct an aeroplane which te is confident is superior in many ways to those of the Wrights and the Herring of the French Aviators. "I do not see that my quest is hopeless", he said, "for if Peary can jet money enough to equip a north Pole search party similar motives may be applied iiv the development f emchanical flight. A successful aeroplane is an attraction which would make millions for its owners, or when finally perfected may have a very beneficial influence upon civiliza tion." He said that not only were the of ficers of our army and navy waiting for the aeroplane tests at Fort Myer, with great interest but' that repre sentatives of European governments would be here to observe the result also. Mr. Ludlow is not particularly sanguine ,that the wrights and the Hearirur will ' do all that is renuired ! 0 in the government's specifications. He said that the six-mile course at Fort Myer over which they must fly is in part very rough country with forests, hills, railroads and other ob structions such as aviators have thus far avoided in making their flights. It is however, the very sort of coun trr which would be encountered in WHERE SOCIETY Social Register Shows Their Whereabouts isto nil ft ip dHUEd tT.,.;;..;,,,. ... in.-., atsHmfr; irT7wa CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENT HELP WANTED MANY ARE ON THEIR YACHTS A Large Percentage However Are Spending Their Summer at Inland Points There is a Large Increase in Number Who Are Abroad. NEW YORK, July 9. Interesting facts, relative to the manner in which many families are passing their sum mer season are reflected by a compar ison of the summer social register for 1908, which has just been issued, with that of last year. Lhief of these s that of 11,303 families or individuals listed. 5,768 are spending the sum mer inland, 25 per cent more than in 19117, while there are 2,623 at the sea shore, a decrease of 156 as compared with last year. There has been large increase n the number gone abroad since April 1, as compared with the same period a a year ago. tnis is oaiancea oy large increase in returns from the other side of the water. Another fea ture is that 16 per cent more families are living abroad their yachts as com pared with last year, the names and descriptions of 799 yachts appearing opposite the names of their owners in the yacht index incorporated book. There is predicted a large increase in the number of foreign address of bankers, all of which is held to indic ate that a large number of American families, usually occupying residences abroad in summer, have returned to live in their own country. As usual the summer social register is limited to the country or foreign addresses of those families who have communicated information. a man may go into politics, a man may knife his best friend, a man may run people down with an automobile, a man may gamble himself to ruin, a THE NATIONAL COUNCIL The National Council for Indus- it was I Mto His Ho. 1 is erecting a plant at PORTLAND, OREGON for the manufacture of their . world famous PORTABLE WELL DRILLING MACHINES for water, oil, gas, etc., etc. A moderate amount of money will start you in a profitable business. It is its purpose to arouse and unify existing industrial organi zation that they may act rapidly and efficiently as circumstances require but that they shall be spared unnec essary effort or expense, their influ ence being- concentrated and directed at the time and upon the specific point where it is required and under the circumstances which make it most effective. Tp this end there must not only be thorough agreement in policy but there must be thorough knowledge- of the legislative situation. Most of all, it is important that the business citizen shall have impressed upon -him the importance of present ing to liis congressional representa tive his views upon matters that vit ally affect his personal and property rights and the conduct and success not only of his own, but of all in dustry. Political, indifference is the great American sin. Its only cure is po litical interest by which men ascer tain the meaning of legislative activ ity and impress upon their representa tives the fact that they are keenly aware of the nature and quality of! matters before them for judgment. This, and this alone, secures protec tion against the enactment into law of rules of conduct that may be more destructive of business and industry, of personal and property rights, than fire, famine or cyclone, than panic, debt and failure.
