SATURDAY, JULY 4, 1908. A 4TH0FJULY WARNING 1 Stat CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OREGON, GANS FAVORITE i Meet Battling Nelson Today at San Francisco NELSON BACKERS CONFIDENT Fight Scheduled to go Forty-five Rounds at Cofforth's Mission Street Arena-Men Will Weigh 133 Pounds at the Ringside. SAN FRANCISCO, July 3.-Or the eve of the battle between Joe Cans and Battling Nelson for the world's lightweight championship honors, the negro is a decided favor ite. Bookmakers predict that many heavy wagers will be made before the men enter the ring tonirorow. Nel son and his backers are confident that he will win a victory over his old time foe, but this opinion is shared by only a small proportion of the sporting experts congregated in San Francisco today to witness the mill. According to the articles of agree ment, the bout will take place tomor row afternoon at Crofforth's Mission street arena and is scheduled to go 45 rounds. The winner will receive 60 per cent and the loser 40 per cent of the 70 per cent of the gross proceeds which will go to the fighters. The men will weigh in at 133 pounds at the ringside stripped. ' Jack Welsh has been agreed upon as referee. A clause in the articles is to the effect that the referee must not put his hands on the men if they should be in a clinch. They must step back at his command. This clause was inserted at the request of Nel son's representative. The Dane never clinches, and this condition is thought to favor him. It was considered of so much importance by Ben Selig that he had a special conference with Cans before he agreed that it be made part of the articles. Nelson does his most effective work at in fighting, hence this is expected to be in his favor. There is every indication that a fecordbreaking crowd will witness the encounter," anxious to see settled the dispute which Nelson and his supporters have tried to keep up ever since that memorable battle at Gold field on September 3, 1906. There has never been any doubt in the minds of the fair ones as to the outcome of the struggle, for only the prejudiced gave any consideration to the ridiculous claims of Nelson that he had been robbed of a vic tory, but the Dane and his imme diate followers have not missed a single opportunity to question the right of the negro to the lightweight championship title, and repeated chal lenges for another contest have been mingled with the numerous attempts to harm the fistic standing of the colored man. Now it is all to be settled in the ring, and if the apparent form of the two men during the past year counts for anything the Dane is in for a worse beating than he received at Goldfield, and a beating, too, that will leave no room for arguments in the future. ' In no light since he escaped a 'knockout or an adverse decision on points by deliberately losing to Gans on a foul in the forty-second round in Nevada has Nelson displayed . his old-time ability. Nelson has pulled off one or two fairly creditable per formances, all things considered, but nevertheless he gave in every appear ance the impression that he wasn't the same Battler, showing in many ways a waning of the qualities that once caused him to be hailed as the king of the lightweight lot. uans on tne otner nana, nas gone right along in the same old way so familiar to fans who have seen in i him for years the greatest fighting j machine, big or little, the ring has ! ever known. His failure to stop Un-! holz in shorter time is not taken to mean the passing of his famous : punch by those who know the re markable ability of the Boer to stand ; punishment. That he is as fit as ever in all other departments there is not the slightest doubt, and the only con clusion possible is th Kiy toXovr contest Nelson is 1 for the first time in his life how it feels to be knocked out. G. B. Burhans Testifies After 4 Years G. B. Burhans, of Carlisle Center, N. Y writes: "About four years ago I wrote you stating that I had been entirely cured. of a severe kidney trouble by taking less than two bot tles of Foley's Kidney Cure. It en tirely stopped the brick dust sedi ment, and pain and symptoms of kidney disease disappeared. I am glad to say that I have never had a return of any of those symptoms during the four years that have elaps ed and I am evidently cured to stay cured, and heartily recommend Foley's Kidney Cure to any one suf fering from kidney or bladder trouble" How to Treat Injuries Received on Independence Day BY SURGEON GENERAL WYMAN 721 Out of 786 Cases of Tetanus Re suit in Death in the Last Five Years Physicians Are Sometimes Careless. WASHINGTON, July 3.-After stating that there have been 786 cases of tetanus in this country dur ing the last five years, as the result of the annual Fourth of July cele bration, of which 721 have died, Surgeon-General Wyman, of the Marine Hospital Corps, makes public the following general warning in regard to the treatment of such cases: "Physicians often treat blank cart ridge and other Fourth of July in: juries, unless of a serious character, as trivial," says the warning, "con tenting themselves with picking out the plainly seen pieces of wad, pow der, etc., and applying a dressing. In a few days the patient returns with symptoms of tetanus, and then, when it is too late, antitoxin is given, the wound is thoroughly cleaned out, and perhaps a piece of wad or clothing found in it. "It should be an invariable pro cedure that all Fourth of July wounds be laid fully open under local or, preferably, general anaesthesia and all foreign material and necrotic or badly injured tissue removed, as the presence of blood clots and necrotic tissue favor anaerobic conditions, which the essential for the develop ment of the tetanus organism. After the wound has been thoroughly cleaned out it should be swabbed out with strong carbolic acid, at least 25 per cent followed by a washing with 95 per cent alcohol, to prevent further action of the acid. Some sur geons use peroxide of hydrogen in stead of carbolic acid. "After cauterization, by whatever methods used, the wound should be thoroughly washed out with a 1:1,000 or 1.2,000 solution of bichloride . of mercury and packed with gauze soaked in a saturated solution of salicylic or boric acid and a large wet dressing of the same solution applied. In no case should the wound be closed, but it should be allowed to heal by granulation. The dressing and packing should be renewed every day."
