VICTORIA, B. C. July 2.-News was brought by the Empress of China from Korea that nearly a thousand pro-Japanese Koreans, members of the II Chin Hoi, a society favoring Japan, have been murdered by Kor ean insurgents, according to statistics collected by Japanese officials. The Korean cabinet, at the direc tion of Japan, has transferred the Korean private imperial estate to the National assets covering the general situation in Korea since the disband ment of the Korean army. A notable article appears in the Kukumina, an influential semi-official organ of Tokio, dealing with foreign criticisms of Japan. The Kokumina calls upon the Japanese people to guard against losing the world's good opinion and says that in contra distinction to the universal respect and good will entertained to ward Japan during the war the na tion has nearly lost the sympthy of the entire world. This attitude is considered mainly to be on account of the Japanese government's over-anxiety to enlarge the navy beyond the financial capacity of the country. Commenting on the article, the Japan Times, published by Japanese in English, says: "Calm reflection shows that the way- in which the late war resulted has been applied in many respects both by those in power and by the public in general.' The journal calls upon the Japan ese people not to display a swollen head." . News was brought by the Empress of China from Dalny that, the dry dock taken from the Russians has been turned over free of expense by j the Japanese government to the j Kwasaki Dock Company. The Mit- J subisji shipyards at Nagasaki are re-1 ported to have received orders to j build the three warships for China. j SWEDISH GUNBOAT WRECKED TROXHJEM, July 2 The Swed ish gunboat Swensklund bound for Spitzenbergen with Prof. Geers. SAN FRANCISCO, July 2.-War vessels in this harbor have been play ing at the game of war for several nights, simulating that the busy waters of the harbor are the condi tions which prevail in actual warfare. The maneuvers have been under the direction of Lt. Commander R. Mc Lean of the admiral's staff on the Connecticut. For several nights the game consisted in giving the torpedo boats an opportunity to hide them selves behind Goat Island or any of the numerous crafe on the bay and then after a time, trying to prevent them from sneaking to within a rad ius of 1,000 yards of any give none of the battleships in Man of War Row without being picked up by the search lights of the battleships. Last night, besides the searchlight drill, the contest included the opera tion of the big guns on the battleships and the crews of the battleship being kept in readiness to turn their batter ies on the members of the mosquito fleet at any minute. The combination, of searchlight arill and gun drill made an exciting evening for officers and men.
