THE MORNING ASTOItlAN, ASTORIA, OREGON The lending social event of the sea mm will culminate on next Tuesday evening when JIim Lola Dora I-'fiard seconded daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Foard of thin city will be united In marriage to Mr. William Campbell Smith of Tacoma, Wash. Many invitation have been , Issurd fr the happy occasion and n number of out of town guest will be present among whom are Min Pitch prin cipal of the Annie Wright Seminary of Tacoma where the bride to-be and her ulster have been educated. This Missc Peterson of San Francisco are at present guest at the Foard home ami will take a prominent part in the fcMivitie Mihtciicut to the af fair. The wedding will take place in the Grace Episcopal Church of lhi city on Tuesday evening, June 30, ut H o'clock. Rev. V. Seymour Short officiated. Later in the evening a re ception will be held at the Foard residence on Seventeenth street. Several very charming shower have been given Mist Foard the past week whkh show in part the esteem and ffpulnrity with which she is held by er many friends in Astoria. ! Mrs. Rich and Mrs, William liar till returned yesterday morning from Newport where they had been in at tendance at the itate encampment of the Women of the Relief Corps. The ladies report having had a grand tunc, abosit WW people visited New port during the encampment and one d.iy paraded. The school children of i'hilomath met the train and supplied the old soldiers and members of the W. R. C. with great armfuls of flower and at each station thereafter the delegate were royally saluted with music and flower. Six bands were in Newport at the time And were lavish with their music. The W, R, C, presented the Newport school with a flag and also gave the soldier of that place a fine silk flag. The next encampment will be held at either McMinnvillc or Corvallis. Yesterday afternoon a pretty home wedding took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. II. F.. I ! .1 ' . v.mijei, m ine presence ol a number of invited friends, Miss Mamie Tu nica attended the bride while Mr. Otto Olsen acted as groomsman. The house was prettily decorated with a profusion ,f roses and cut flower. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs Olsen received the congratulations and best wishes of their friends and later a sumptuous wedding repast was crvcd, The young couple have gone to Portland to spend their honeymoon. I he second animal rose festival given by Mr, J, E. Fcruuson'i Sun day school class on last Saturday af ternoon and evening in the First Methodist Church was a pronounced success, The flower distdav wa beautiful and elaborate, the decora- uoiis were very artistic. The young people were assisted in entertaininc by .Mcsilanies Harriden, Brix, Frhch and Ferguson and the Mies Wini fred iiiggin, Elsie Elmore, Viola Mapes and Jennie Jeffer. A number of beautiful bouquet were taken to the hospital where they made glad the hearts of the sick. The program was very meritorious and well ren dered consisting of vocal selections by Miss Mapes, Miss Hannah Lahti, Mr. Gustave Zeigler and Guy Nelson, recitations by Mrs. Hatch, Mis Jen nie JefTcr and Mis Helen Roberts and violin selections by Mis Laura Jeffcrs. Several beautiful choruses were also rendered at both afternoon and evening session. The members of the Birthday Club of the Methodist Church were de lightfully entertained on Friday af ternoon at the residence of Mr. V. Wright on Astor street. The room were fragrant with great bouquet of roses and California poppies. About 25 ladies were present and spent sev eral very happy hours, in social con versation, and with their fancy work An excellent luncheon of salad, sand witches, cake and coffee was served1 by the hostess, assisted by her daughter-in-law, Mrs, Frank Lewis, The Misses Winifred and Maud Van Duscn entertained in a most uniue and charming manner last Sat urday evening at their home on Har rison Ave. The occasion being a cnina shower to Miss roard whose electric lights were hidden in Jap anese lanterns and punch was served by little girls dressed in eastern style from a realistic tea room. About 65 couples were present and joined in the dancing which lasted until mid night. The ladies present were very nanusomciy gowned. In front of Mis Foard who had the seat of honor at the bead of the table, was placed a large imita tion brides cake which contained the gifts of the quests. Over her head bung a huge wedding bell composed entirely of white roses, the clapper of which was a red ball filled with white roc petals that fell over the bride elect when she "cut-the-cake". While the tiest still remained seated at the table, Mis Maude Van Duscn turned to the piano and ohyed accompani ments to appropriate songs while Miss Irene Simington ng the solos and the others joined in the choruses. The prize for the game 500 was won by Miss Lola Foard and Mr. Harvey Al len. The Misses Van Dusen were as sisted in receiving by the Misses Lcta Drain, Lois Parker and Gertrule Up shur, others present were the Misses Peterson, M. Peterson of San Fran cisco, Miss Swett of Tacoma, Freda Foard Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher, Missrs F. Fulton, M. Lounsbcry, H. Flavel, L. Lounsbcrry, W. Stine P, Wirght, G. Utzinger and A. Hughes. It was regretcd that Mr. Smith the groom elect was unavoidably prevent ed from attending this pleasant func tion. On Sunday, June 21, at the Metho dist Episcopal Church of Salem, Miss Madary V. O'Flyng of that city and Mr. 0. H. Belknap of Chinook, Wash., were united in marriage. On their return from their wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Belknap will make their home in Chinook. Mrs. W. C. Logan was hostess on Wednesday afternoon at her resi dence on Grand avenue for a charm ing miscellaneous shower given in honor of Miss Lola Foard whose marriage takes place the coming Tuesday. Many friends of the young bridc-to-bc were present and spent a very happy afternoon. Mrs. Logan was assisted in receiving by Mrs. W. E, Schimpff. Mrs. A. A. Finch entertained at luncheon yesterday afternoon at her home on Franklin avenue. The honor guest on thi occasion was Mrs. F. A. Harridon of Washington, D. C. Friday noon a luncheon party was tendered Miss Lola Foard and her visiting friends, by Miss Winifred Higgins, at her home on Eighth street. On Friday afternoon, June 26th, at the residence of Mr. John Hendrick scn in Uniontown, Miss Sofiie Tam lamfie and Mr. Charles iLndrass, both of Seaside were united in marriage by the Rev. Gustave E. Rydquist, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of this city. The young couple will make their home at Seaside. The members of Woman Chris tian temperance Union will meet so cially the coming Thursday after noon at the residence of Mrs. J. A. Ranncls in Uppertown. A very pretty compliment, which was much appreciated by the teachers of the Astoria schools was tendered them yesterday afternoon by Man ager Hanlin of the Astoria opera house, when they attended in a body the matinee performance of "Nell Gwynn," as his guests. Miss Aenes Karineri was the for- A very delightful reception and tunate recipient of the scholarship dance was tendered the graduating , award offered by Whitman College class of the Astoria High School on at Walla Walla. At the close of the Wednesday evening at Logan's hall , commencement exercises on Friday by the junior class. A: ' Society of the First Lutheran church held a very enjoyable meeting on last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. P, A. fScrglund in Aider- brook. About 3i bulieii were present and greatly enjoyed the hospitable entertainment provided. 4 Mrs, John Riley 'was hostess this past week for a social evening of the young people of the Catholic Church given in St. Mary's hall on Craw! avenue. Card and dancing were en gaged in until a late hour, all pres ent having a delightful time. A charming little affair was given on Tuesday afternoon in honor of Miss Lola Foard, 'by Mrs. Nclon Troyer at her home on Third street. The Thursday Afternoon Club was entertained this past week by Mrs. J. Paul Dadollet, at her borne on Commercial street. Five hundred was the game of the afternoon, Mrs. I. N. Carman won the prize. ' Mrs. Nathaniel Tallant'was hostess thi last week at her home on Fif teenth street for a meeting of the Saturday Afternoon Club. SOCIETY PERSONALS. 1 Misses Mary and Ruth Garner are week-end visitors in Portland. Mrs. A. D. Garner and children are in Portland for a week's visit.
