They have never had word of the body of their young on, Ver non, who wa drowned in this harbor some weeks ago; but Mr, Elbon still itands read to pay the reward of $50 for the recovery of hi son' remains, at any time. Here All Summer Professor Emil Enna announces that he is going to spend most of the summer in Astoria. He is very fond of the city, and the many friend he ha here naturaly has endeared the place to him. For the entire season he expert to be in Astoria at least for the first four days of each week, running up to Portland for the re mainder of the week, Horse Found A dark horse was found at the top of Eighth street yesterday afternoon by two boys by the name of Ferdand j Paulsen and Eugene Delland. The) animal had a set of harness on. and the boys think it was a runaway. Any party who may be interested can sec the animal, which the boy brought down town last night, and tied up in Allen's slip, behind Allen' tore. Bargain Hunters The sale at JalofT yesterday was almost unprecedented in several ways. The ladies apparently read the advertisements carefully, and they turned out in full force to take ad vantage of the bargains offered at JalofFs. For a while it looked as if it would be wise to call in an officer to keep the throng straightened out. Apparently advertising does pay. BERGLUND, AT THE OFFICE OF THE ALASKA FISHERMEN'S PACKING COM PANY HERE. Mail advice were received at the office of the Alaska Fishermen' Packing Company, in thi city, ye terday, direct from Superintendent V. A. Herglund, the company' repre sentative in the far north. He report all well and everything promising, on the date be wrote, June 4th. The fleet arrived in at Nushagak in the following order: The North Star on May 16th; the hip St. Nichola and Berlin, on the 18th, and the ship Henry Villard on the 24th. All hav ! in it had heavv dealintr with the ice field en route. The voyage wa con- siderably slower than that made last year. The full trip took up 39 day to complete; with a 12-day run to Unl mak Pass, where they were barred by ice for another 12 days, and at a point 60 mile beyond there the ice forbade further progress for a while! Bchring Sea beging almost crowded with it. On May 11th the North Star ran alongside the Villard and report ed she had been within 100 miles of the company's cannery at Nushagak, and had" been compelled to turn back from the crowding ice floes. Superintendent Bcrglund writes very cheerfully, and lays especial em phasis upon the fact that the fleet ar rived in ample time to meet and pre pare for the June run of King sal mon. It is presumed that all the families interested in this great an nual venture have received personal mail by the post that brought down Mr. Bcrglund's letters. The Eagle Screams The Fourth of July committee has decided that the children sports will j be held in the morning, commencing l about 10 o'clock, They will include the potato race, climbing a greased pole, and the like. Commencing Mon ,la'. Secretary Haldcrman will be in h' office daily to attend to any and a" matters in connection with the Fourth of July entertainment. Special request is made that all of the chil (iren wno nave selected to ride in the Liberty car meet at the office of Superintendent Clark at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The committee wishes to emphasize its invitations for everyone to join in on the parade on the Fourth; instead of standing on the sidewalk, it is requested that everybody get in line. The com mittee oners tne toiiowing prizes: First prize for the best decorated or most appropriate float, $25; second prize, for the second best float, or dec orated two-horse vehicle, $15; third prize, for the third best float, or dec orated one-horse vehicle, $10; 4th, prize, for the best decorated auiomo bile, $15; 5th prize, for the second best decorated automobile, $10, Terva Is Sentenced Eli Terva. bound over to the circuit court Friday on a charge of assault ing Matt Walquist, was arraigned yesterday and later appeared before Judge McBridc and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail. Terva had no attorney nor apparently any means to retain one, and therefor the court appointed Attorney C. J. Courtis to appear for the prisoner. Evidently he had little or no defense and the plea of guilty was entered. In this case there was quick dispatch and justice was vindi cated in short order. The authorities feel that they have a right to congra tulate themselves in the matter, for heretofore it has ben a pretty hard time to secure a verdict against cer tain ones among the foreign popula tion no matter how apparent the guilt was. Torpedoes Have Gone The missing fireman of the torpedo boat Rowan apparently found himself and returned to his vessel sometime before daylight yesterday morning. The little fleet of torpedo boats got away early yesterday morning and as far as can be learned Word, the sup posed drowned man, went that gets vessel. It isn't every man that gets a chance to read his own obituary, as i Ward did. and doubtless he will prize the experience highly. From all ac counts the weather was smooth out- ! side yesterday and the torpedo boats probably are having an easy voyage i down the coast to Eureka. 1 Correction Asked, And Made In the issue of this paper on the ( 18th instant, touching the famous ! Sunset Magazine, it was stated that I the magazine and its staff and work i were under the direction of H. R. ijtidah, A. G. P. A., of the Southern J Pacific system. This was error; the ! department controlling the Sunset monthly, is under the guidance of Paul Shoup, A. G. P. A., of that great line. All of which being tech- nically so, does ont in the least mimify ! the real excellence of the popular periodical. jOne Piano Number with You can be dressed clothe you If you want something conservative We Have It If you want something ultra and smart We Have That Too HER' Mentally Deranged Frank Bcckman, while apparently demented, created some little excite ment in Uniontown yesterday morn ing and was taken into custody by Deputy Archie McLean. Beckman is probably the same man who has been seen in the neighborhood of Warren ton and Hammond the past few days, where his strange actions frightened the residents. It is probable that Qeckman walked into the city Friday night, appearing in Union yesterday morning. It was at once seen that his mind was affected and a telephone message was sent to the ' sheriffs office. Deputy Sheriff McLean an swered the call, and while going out after the man, saw him riding in the rear of a delivery wagon. He jumped into the wagon and told the man that he was wanted at the court house, whereupon Beckman made a wild leap out of the vehicle. He fell on his face fcut was not injured. Later at the county jail he gave his name and other facts. He has been working on the, jetty, and apparently his men tal derangement may be traced to intoxicants. Beckman was taken be fore Judge Trenchard, who deemed it best to hold the man in the county jail for a few days to see if he does not get better. Proud And Happjr , Fred D. Finch, the well known ar chitect who has cast his fortunes in with Astoria, and has settled here in business, was made glad and comfort able yesterday by the news that some coal land holdings of his up in Brit ish Columbia had been disposed of at the practical and handsome sum of $65,00. Mr. Finch thinks the buyer is the Grand Trunk Railway people; but he is not caring very much who they are, so long as the "considera tion" conies through intact. He is to be congratulated on the result of his investment. Commendable Enterprise- Tagg in the remodeling and refurn- ishing of his Commercial street store. is commended on all sides. The house has been equipped with all sorts of modern and handsome appointments, the stock increased along all lines of the confectionery trade, and the place is among the really handsome and in viting resorts of the city. His Hat Remained Yesterday-morning at 4 o'clock, the police discovered a man's hat in the Fourteenth street slip, with numer ous signs of a recent debauch all about the dock; the conclusion being in favor of . another wretched acci dent,. in which drowning will probab ly figure very conspicuously. City Buys Water A deed was filed in the office of the county clerk yesterday whereby James Neil sells to the city of As torit all the rights and privileges of the water in Buck Creek, and also a right-of-way whereon to construct pipes to take the water away. The consideration was $600. fjfo. corretfiy on the Fourth if you let WISE Milk And Electricity One of the Ingall's dairy wagons, laden with milk and cream, was in collision yesterday morning with an Astoria electric car, at the corner of Commercial and Tenth streets. But aside from a smashed wagon wheel, no serious damage was done to either vehicle. Off To The Nehalem A pleasant part is in course of or ganization for a two months' trip into the Nehalem country. The group is made up of Mr. and Mrs. Frank San born; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dayton,; and Mrs. Captain Charles Richardson and family; and they will depart on the joll excursion early this week- New Talking Facilities "Uncle" Charlie Wright, the genial boniface of the Occident, has had in stalled in that office a long-distance telephone booth; and it is not to be denied that the improvement will be highl appreciated by the patrons of the old hostelry. Such things always count for despatch and convenience in a hotel. Launched Yesterday The splendid motor boat, the Irene Barnes," built at the R. M. Leathers yard in this city for F. C. Barnes, of Lake Bay, Alaska, and powered by the Astoria Iron Works left the ways yesterday morning, fully equip ped with a fine threecylinder, Troyer Fox engine, of 35 horsepower, and she worked like a charm from the in stant she touched the waters of the bay. She will make her trial trip to day and much is expected of her in the way of speed. She will go north on her long voyage sometime during the present week. They were fresh from the plan, glow ing with warm rich colors, deliciously perfumed, compact, firm, and lucious beyond description. Expert and epi cure may search the earth for any thing to exceed them. They were photographed by Coe, and seen by all men who came their way. Some of them measured 7 inches in cir cumference, and eight of them lincf up at a random covered a space of 14$ inches on a platter. The repor torial mouth watered for half a day after the inspection given them in this office, and then some. They are cultivated from a seed developed by a Mrs. Morris, and had their incep tion on the north bank of the Colum bia opposite this city. They will create a furore on the western market when they reach it. For a backward season the berries are a literal marvel f and under normal conditions there is no reckoning their perfect attainment. Each $5 Sale 1! WItS Spontaneous Combustion . A good story leaked out here yes terday about the recent target prac tice at Fort Stevens, when the mortar batteries were put through their pace. The tremendous guns gave off reports and concussions peculiarly their own, and the guests who hap pened to be present had some queer experiences. The shock of the blasts cut the flowers off at the earth they stood in, the grass bowed itself before the fierce disturbances set up by the discharges; men's coats were unbut toned and hat were anywhere but where they were supposed to be. One of the ladies present had the remark able experience of having her over skirt drop to the ground at one of the explosions, and she was perfectly un cosncious of it until the reverbera tions ceased and she stopped watch ing the flight of the shells. Then she quietly picked up the truant garment and fastened it safely, but left the grounds before another mortar was discharged. Judge McBride Leaves. The term of circuit court in Calt sop county came to an end yesterday afternoon, though no formal adjourn ment was taken for the reason that Judge McBride expects to come to Astoria sometime in July. Therefore the term was kept open. There are a few matters yet to be considered, though probably they will not take more than a dav or so. Tudee Mc Bride left on the evehing train for Hillsboro to hold court there. Be cause of the fact that there are four counties in his district, Judge Mc Bride is kept very busy all the time and he is worked much harder than any other circuit judge in the state. It is well understood that the next legis lature will in all probability either divide the district, or else arrange for the election of another judge to take up a portion of the work. ' Wanted. Six young ladies to assist in store on the Fourth. Hoefler's. NOTICE THOSE WHO HAVE applied for work on the Astoria, Seaside & Tillamook Ry.
