A Our Motto Has Been, Is, and Always Will Be: "The Same for Less Money, and Better for the Same Money." THE FAMOUS THE WEATHER Oregon Showers, cooler except near the coast and in southwest portion. NO GROUCH HERE!. There are those in this city who seem to have reached a conclusion that the Astorian is knocking the city and its prospective developments of various sorts. This we deny em phatically; and to bolster the denial we assert that the bulk of complaints against us come direct from those who are next and nearest the things we have had to deal with in a critical way. This paper can no more afford to "knock" anything in Astoria than - any other man or business; we are Astorian and Clatsopian to the core, and to back this we are paying out $20,000 per anaum on our pay-roll, alone, let alone the big sums we dispense in the way of current ex pense; and what is more that cur rent expense is paid into Astoria business hands and is not sent to Portland, save for those things where with this market is not supplied. The J. S. Dellinger Co., blank book manufacturers and publishers of the Astorian, ships its products into six States, and its name is favorably known by thousands of firms in the northwest who have used those products, and have paid thousands of dollars for the same which has been again dumped into the business chan nels of Astoria, and that's not all we intend to keep on doing it and ask our critics if they are doing as wen for Astoria. If any merchant or householder wants to know the inequity of the ratings here, all he has to do is to scan the schedule that is imposed on the town of Raymond in the State of Washington, and he will discover, at once, the discrepancy that operates against us, bearing in mind always, that the two places are built upon ex actly the same plane of construc tion. The risks of Astoria are at pres ent under scrutiny for re-alignment and report to San Francisco, and the presumption here is that there will be an attempt made to raise the exist ing schedules, a proposition that will be met sharply and vigorously by way of protest. There are few town in all Oregon that have as fine a fire-service as Astoria; and fewer still that pre serve the constitutional immunity we do in the way of fires. We are built on wood and of wood, of course, but there are only two months in the 12 during which any real risk at taches from this source, and yet the tendency is to raise the scale regu larly. We expect to hear from this decla ration at once and are prepared for the protest, and the protest will be made the text of continued effort for a reduction that means a living chance to the man most interested here. iUARANTEED CLOTHING Better ffion Qistoni '.Mtado' Is "Better for the Same Money" It is better than auy clothing you have ever been offered at anything like the very moderate prices ask. That's what we are in ex istance for, and that we are miscon strued by those who are pinched a bit in the discussion, makes no dif ference to us. We are after the gen eral good and safety and that is all there is to it. We, are daily and hourly in touch with the candid sentiment of the people here; far more so than those who pretend to tell us where we fail. We have no hammer out for any thing that is fair and square and business-like but if a hundred men tell us the same thing in the course of a day on any given proposition Now as to the Holdings Company; if the business men of Astoria will meet and select a committee of five of its number to act as the directorate of the Oregon Coast Railway Com pany, I am sure that the incorpora tors will gladly turn over all author ity to them and wish them God-speed and good-will in the work. You will also kindly remember, first; that the Subsidiary company will be purely Astorian, and surely any Astorian would guard its inter est. Second, that the incorporators will secure one-half of the stock sub scription and will then call a meeting of said stockholders to elect a board we are going to look into it and help j of directors. Said work will be car straiehten it out if it is the last thing i ried on without cost.
