John Opia'a First Portrait and What It Cott Him. John Opie. the English painter, li dfscrlbed lu "Coke of Norfolk and His Frlonda." by Mrs. A. M. W. Stirling, as a man of uuiuble origin who achiev ed success wholly by bis own genius and perseverauce. The story of bis first effort to that Hue of art which afterward brought hlni fame be relat ed to Coke, tlrst Earl of Leicester of Ilolkham, as follows: Whou a small boy of ten or twelve be was left at hone oue Sunday after noon wltb bis father, while bis moth er went to church. The father estab lished himself iu the parlor wltb bis liiblo and told the boy to be quiet aud amuse himself. Vouug Opie, who had procured some paluts. took up his position unobserved In the kitchen directly opposite the parlor door. Very quietly he drew a portrait of the old man bending over bis Dlble until be bad finished every thing except the bead, wheu be began running backward and forward to study his father'B tace. The old gentleman grew very angry at these apparently senseless interrup tions and threatened to punish his son if they continued. This was exactly what the boy want ed, as be wished to paint his father's eyes lit up and sparkling with anger. So be continued his irritating behavior until it met with the desired result, and his father, Justly wrathful, admin istered a sound thrashing. This achieved, the boy resumed his task eagerly aud transferred to his picture the expression which he had Just seen upon the face of his indig nant parent When his mother returned from church he placed the picture trium phantly before her; but, although aston ished and delighted with it, she thought it her duty to scold her son severely for painting on a Sunday. Youug Opie, however, cared no more for the scolding than for the beating he had received in accomplishing his work and only bugged his mother de lightedly in his excitement at its suc cess. ' 1 Ills father, coming into the room at that Juncture and spying the portrait of himself, was so surprised und pleas ed at It that he told the mother not to scold the boy any more. Subsequently, whenever the picture was shown, he used to tell with great relish the story of young Ople's plucky acceptance of a beating In order to In sure its success. Tht Cockatoo's Nutcracker Bill. There Is. n wonderful cockatoo in oue of the islands of the indian ocean; near New Guinea. It is as large as a full grown pheasant, and it is of a Jet black color. The bird is remarkable for Its immensely strong bill and the clev er manner in which it is used. The bill is as bard as steel, and the upper part has a deep notch. Now, the favorite food of this cockatoo Is the canary nut but there U wonderful ingenuity . re quired to get at It, for the nut Is some thing like a Brazil nut but it is ten times as hard. In fact It requires the blow of a heavy hammer to crack it. It Is quite smooth and somewhat trian gular In shape. Nature appears to have given the possessor of the wonderful bill some intelligence to direct its pow ers, for the cockatoo takes one of the nuts edgewise In its bill and by a carv ing motion of its sharp lower beak makes a small notch on It. This done, the bird takes bold of tne nut with its claws and, biting off a piece of leaf, retains it in the deep notch of the up per part of the bill. Then the nut is seized between the upper and lower parts of the bill and Is prevented slip ping by the peculiar texture of the leaf. & sharp nip or two break off a tiny piece of the shell of the nut. The bird then seizes the nut in its claws and pokes the long, sharp point of its bill Into the hole and picks out the kernel Wt by bit ' Subscribe for the Morning Astorian.
