BOND STREET STEEL & EWART Electrical Contractors Phone Main 3881 426 Bond Street NEW YORK, June 15.-.evcr the history of this city has a larger or more enthusiastic delegation gone to a national convention than that which is off for Chicago yesterday The personal victory of Governor Hughes at Albany is still fresh in the minds of the thousands who wll rep resent the Empire State on the shores of Lake Michigan and the politician ere predict that there are all the elements of a real stampede for New York's favorite son in the enthusiasm which is blottled up in the shouting in load. If the Hughe!! spirit which overflows from this delegation proves as infectious on the conven floor as it has on the crowds hich sped the party here, the vctcr declare, no one need be surprised see New York carry off the highest honors. Never since this state first pired to offer its governor for the presidency have the prospects of sud- din success looked brighter it is ;recd. TRAILING TREASURES Poking frantically through a wet, charred mess of wreckage, the hotel guests whose quarters crumbled in flames out at Bronxville this week are still held to the spot by the faint hope of recovering their lost jewel treasures. Clothing, rich and rare enough to fit a dozen fashionable Fifth Avenue shops, lies turned to shy flakes in the ruins of one wing of the luxurious resort and beneath the twisted timbers there must be buried pecks of precious stones. That rare chance of time and attention evented their cremation by scores in the sudden flame-sweep has ap parently been forgotten by these bed raggled men and women who cease lessly furrow the rank embers for their gems and trinkets. Hal the sub tle source of this conflagration oper ated in the late night, the experts declare, this town would to-day be mourning one of the greatest human tragedies in 'ts history. FILLING FULNESS Instead of starving scholars the misguided relief enthusiasts have to day discovered only red cheeks and full stomachs all over the school benches of the greater city. The doubly-succored little patrons of a few extemporized free lunches at the noon hour are threatened more with gout or gastritis than the hunger which has been heralded. The laugh is on the benevolent amateurs who raised the wild cry of starvation, and the shrill voices of the children are leading the chorus. Wide investiga tion by the school authorities has. to day disclosed the fact that almost every little interior into which the free kitchens have poured broth and bread was previously well lined with pastry and meat at the home table. As the result of the well-meant min istrations of the relief workers the ever-ready child appetite now calls for pepsin rather than nourishment. PARK PARADE PASSING. In place of the park parade, which which used to fill the driveways with glistening gowns and horseflesh, only dull lines of automobiles are to-day to be' seen the length and breath of Central Park. What thousands once flocked to see, few remain to- smell in these days of motor transit. The glint of varnish and trappings and the prancing of the high-actioncd hack ney has to-day been almost entirely superseded by the honk of the horn and the dusty whirl of the mud-clotted machine. The only cheering sign for the man-afoot, who used to en joy the sights of spring along the park walks, is the wonderful bed of rhododendrons which Mrs. Russell Sage is just having installed along the East Drive. No charity could delight the modest New Yorkers more than a brightening of this parkway, which had come to be only one long funnel of dust and evil odor. DOWN ON THE DEAD ONE All New York within hail of the Bowery is to-day deep in discussion of Boss Crocker's proposed importa tion of the ruins of the Temple ofj Philae. Archaeo logy is a lost art over on the East Side, where interest centers in the "live ones" rather than the dead. However, all Egypt' lias been gal vanized into new life to the Tam many henchman by the interest which Croker is reported to have taken in its classic ruins. Mummies may yet adorn the bars of the choicest corner saloons and the Tammany tiger turn to a sphynx. Subscribe for The Morning Astorian. 77 Ninth St., near Bond Fresh and Salted Fish.
