Compere, entomologist, arrived here yesterday on the liner China after a tour of India and the Far East in search of the natural enemies of the pests that infest the orchards of California. His quest was successful and when he left Western Australia three months ago the parasite that he found in India was reducing the rav ages of the fruit fly to a noticeable degree. This parasite was discov ered five years ago but previous at tempts to introduce it into Australia failed cm account of the opposite sea sons. By putting the bugs to sleep in India with ice Compere got 100, 000 of them to Australia alive. He woke them up in the heat of Austral ian winter and thinking they were still in India the parasites- went to work with a will. Three generations of native born bugs saw the light be fore Compere left the Antipodes. He also took to Australia a parasite which swept away the cabbage aphis like fire. He has brought to Cali fornia a parasite to destroy the mealy bug, a pest that causes great grief to the orange grower. He discover ed this friendly bug in Japan. INCUBATOR BABY'S FATE (Continued from page 1) then decided the adoption was legal and gave the real mother six hours in which to surrender the baby. While a deputy sheriff waited in the Bleakley home Mrs. Bleakly slipped out a back way with the child in her arms and caught an express train. By means of a bogus arrest by a bogus officer ,it is alleged, she had herself conducted safely past pursuit through Kansas and Missouri into Illinois, where the circuit court had recognized the validity of her claim. For several months she and her child lived happily at Rock Island until the supreme court returned the child to Mrs. Barclay. Meanwhile an appeal had been taken in Kansas and the supreme court of that state had upheld the claims of the real mother. Mrs. Bleak- ley fled in disguise back to Kansas, where she now lives. Mrs. Barclay has spent $50,000 in her fight for the baby. She calls the child Dorothy Edith Barclay. Its real mother, who is poor, has spent $5000 in defending her claims. She knows the child as Marian Roberta Bleakley. Several famous Kansas lawyers have handled Mrs. Bleakley's case free of charge. About $3500 has been contributed to help her by public sub scription. HOLMES' TRAGEDY Body Was Found in a Down Town Alley THE POLICE STILL BAFFLED Solution of Mystery, Will Disclose it is Believed, the Operations ol Experts Was Last Seen Shortly After Midnight. CHICAGO, May 22,-Solution of the mystery surrounding the murder of Robert P. Holmes, purchasing agent the the Commonwealth Edison Electric Company, whose dead body was found in a downtown alley early yesterday will disclose, it is believed, the operations of experts in crime. That the killing and robbing of Holmes was not the work of ordinary thugs, but was perpetrated by men who probably mingled with their victim's friends at the Auditorium, represented themselves to be dele gates to the Electrical Convention and then followed him as he left the hotel, police authorities agreed after work ing all day on the tragedy. Holmes is known to have left the hotel 15 or 20 minutes after midnight. Just before departing he told friends he thought he would get a cab and be driven home. Working on the theory that Holmes' murderers got him into a cab, slugged him into unconscious ness, and then threw his body into a dark corner as the vehicle was driven through the alley, patrolmen and de tectives were last detailed to conduct a thorbugh search for clues among downtown cab drivers and to search leading hotels for suspicious char acters.
