' In From Nehalem Tim Corcoran, the well known oitizen and costable of Jewell, arrived in Astoria yesterday morning with 80 tine head of hogs, which he disposed of readily at the live-weight figure of 51 cents per pound. . Mr. Corcoran has been constable out in that country for the past six years and is again a candidate for the office. He is one of the solid Clatsopians and a busy and successful farmer. No Regatta Thia Year, The Aatoria Regatta Committee has decided to call off the annual re gatta for the year 1908, owing to the multitude of pressing affairs engaging the attention and contributions of the merchants and people generally. The matter was very thoroughly gone over by the entire committee and the con sensus of opinion was that it was to the best interests of all urgent things pending at present, and due to the continued generosity of. the people who make such events possible. More Bad Newa . Simultaneously with the mournful news that reached his colleague, Rev. Mr. Short, yesterday, the rector of Holy I nnovents' Episcopal Chapel, Rev. John Warren, also had sad news from his home in distant England, and left yesterday morning for Hood River to confer with his sons who are iu business there. Just what the nature of the intelligence was, could not be ascertained, but it was of grev ious and important nature and neces sitated Mr. Warren's instant depart ure, for a conference with his child ren. Three Probate Orders Jud Trcnchard. sitting for pro bate matters yesterday made the fol lowing orders: In the estate of the late August C. Kinney, appointing Mrs. Jane Kinney as administratrix of the estate, under a bond of $6000 and naming Messrs. B. Van Dusen, D. M. Stuart and J. N. Griffin, as appraisers of the estate. In the estate of Nils A Ackcrman, an order was made to sell the personal property of the es- tate and report thereon in due time, In the matter of the estate of the late James Brown, Mary A. Twilight, the administratrix was directed to sell the realty belonging to the estate. On a Sad Errand- Rev. W. Seymour Short, rector of Crace Episcopal Church of thia city, and his sister, Mrs. Frank Spittle, have just received sad and urgent summons to their home at Bethel, Conn., where their aged mother is lying very ill of dropsical affection, and they left on last evening's ex press. Mr. Short could not give any details, but said that both he and Mrs. Spittle realized the necessity for instant departure, since the call came from their father, who would not have summonsed them had not the danger been very manifest. They go with ttii utmost hone of a host ot friends' that a change for the better will have taken place by the time they arrive there. The rector left so bur riedly that he could not say anything an to the immediate work of the church, but intimated that it would be attended to promptly and prop erly, and all interested be duly ad vised of it. He expects to be gone the better part of a month. Notifies Contractors In compliance with the instructions of the council, Auditor Olof Anderson sent the following letter to each one of the contractors now performing work for the city, and the letter is self-explanatory: Astoria, Or., May 5. 1908. To W. A. Goodin, E. A. Gerding, Birch & Jacobson, A. R. Foote, L. A. Carter, John Slotte, Heckard Bros., and Charles E. Johnson, con tractors, now under contract with the city 'of Astoria, Oregon, to 'improve streets, construct sewers, etc. You and each of you, are hereby notified to conform with and live up to the following clause in the charter of the city of Astoria which is made a part of every contract for street and sewer work performed for said city as follows towit: "Section 157, of Chapter XVVV Fourth: Every contract for work to be, performed for the city must pro vide that in the performance of the contract eight hours shall be the maximum hours of labor on any cal ender date. Any contract for work to be performed for the city which docs not comply with the provisions of this section shall be null and void." By Order of the Common Council. . . The water commission held a short session yesterday morning to consider the question of an additional supply of water for the city. The recent survey for making a connection with Fat Buck Cr!ek made by Gelo Park er and later checked up by Engineer Kelley of Portland was satisfactory and the board decided to tap the creek and work will be commenced as soon as data can be secured. The five members who were present Messrs. Wright, Bowlby, Fisher, Trenchard and Van Dusen went up to inspect the work recently done on No. 2 Res ervoir by James Hanson.
