WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1908. 6 THE MORNING ASTOIilAN, ASTORIA, OREGON. FOUR EXPEDITIONS American Museum of Natural History Sending Them Out PALEONTOLOGICALSPECIMENS One Party Will Go to the Montana Fields to Search for a Specimen of the Horned Dinosaur No Complete Specimen of Which is Found. NEW YORK, April 2& Prepara tions are being made at the American Museum of Natural History to send out four expeditions into as" many states in the west in search of Pale- ontological specimens. The first party it has been determined, will leave in a few weeks; two will leave in June and the last will start in Aug ust At the head of the first party are Dr. Y. D. Mathcw and Albert Thom son. They will go to Nebraska where they will confine their investigations )o the ancestry of Mammals, such as three toed horses. Their studies em brace the micene period, which scientist have agreed was at its flower only one millions years ago. The second party goes to Wyoming for an investigation of the deposits of the Cocene period which is placed some two million years in the calendar of the scientists. While Dr. Mathew "and Mr. Thomson will look for the three toed horses, Walter Granger of the museum will try to find its ancest or, the four toed horse, a specimen of which, almost beyond value to the museum, has just been placed on ex hibition. It w asfound in the Wyora- . ing beds in 1896 and has been mount ed with great care. In front there are four distinct toes while the hind feet have only three, showing that the ani odmal was even then in a transition period. The third party, by going to Montana will get into a period of the history of the world which is two million years behind the Eocene per iod, or a matter of four million from the present time. Scientists remem ber it bv the word Cretaoceous, in which lived the Dinosaurus. Barnum Brown of the Museum will head this party and their search will be directed especially toward finding in the Montana fields the horned Din osaur, no complete specimen of which is found. Each of these parties will engage in the study of modern his tory, when one considers the line in vestigation which the fourth and last group of scientists will take up in Texas. In the Lone Star state ex tending over many miles are deposits of the Permian period, not less than TEETH Without Plata. The Old Reliable CHICAGO PAINLESS DENTISTS Cor.
