The visit proved a pleasurable one for all. The ritual was fully ex amplified, for the approval of the chief who was greatly pleased with it and the thriving condition of the lodtre here. At the close of the bust ness session a sumptuous banquet was served. Mrs. Dunning was the guest of Mrs. I. Bergman during her stay in this city. On Friday evening, April 24, the debate which will decide the state chamDionshiD in the mterscholastic series, will be held in the Astoria opera house. The debators will be a team from Baker City and the local High School team. The question to be discussed is as follows: "Resolv ed, That the members of the Mouse of Representatives of Oregon should be elected by proportional representa tion." The negative side of the ques tion will be supported by the Baker City team. StAldemar Encampment, Knights Templar, will in all probability attend the ,services at Grace Episcopal Church today.. Trullinger will enter tain the members of the Fortnightly Club on next Friday evening at the Trullinger home on Exchange street. The Sewing Society of the Relief Corps met with Mrs. Rich at her home on Fifth street on Wednesday afternoon. About 20- ladies were present and had a very nice time, sewing and in pleasant conversation. The society is preparing for a bazaar to be given in the early fall and at the meetings each member donates a small sum toward the purchase of materials to be used in the makimr of the fancy articles which will be offered for sale. A very extensive program has been arranged for the Clatsop County Teachers Annual Institute which will be held in the county court house, Wednesday. Thursday Friday. Satur day, April 22, 23, 24,25. Mrs. May M. utzmger will have charge ot the music and Mr. W. B. Branstator, sec retary of the Institute, will issue to each teacher a certificate of attend ance. The lecturers and instructors for the week are State Superintend ent of Instruction J. H. Ackerman, Prof. L. R. Traver, teacher of me thods', Monmouth; Prof. H. D. Shel don, pedagogy, University of Oregon; Prof L. R. Alderman, city superin tendent, Eugene; and Mrs. Cornelia Marvin, secretary of the Salem Li brary Association. Dr. and Mrs. Holt and children . will spend this week at their cottage at Gearhart. Mrs. J. M. Holt was tendered a very delightful surprise party on last Saturday night, Sunday being her birthday anniversary. At the instance of Dr. Holt, about 30 friends ap peared to help celebrate the happy occasion. Mrs. Holt was the recipient of a number of appropriate memen- J toes of the day. A number of vocal and instrumental musical selections were 'rendered during the evening and six handed euchre was played, dainty refreshments were served and all :n attendance had a most enjoy' able time. Lewis and Clarke Lodge of Hanv mond have extended to Beaver Lodge I. O. O. F. and Gateway Rebekah Lodge of Astoria an invitation to visit with them on Saturday evening, April 25th. The invitation has been accepted and a special boat has been chartered for the occasion. The boat will, leave the Lurline dock at seven o'clock and all Odd Fellows and Re bekahs are invited to attend as Ham mond Lodge is noted for royally en tertaining visitors. On Tuesday afternoon the annual meeting of the Portland Presbytery will convene at the First Presbyterian Church of this city and about 35 clergymen will be in attendance. A stereoptican address on "Missions Around the World," will be given by Dr. Hiram Foulkes on Tuesday even ing to which the public is cordially invited. The Birthday Club of the Methodist Church will meet on next Saturday afternoon with Mrs. M. L. Hawthorne at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Ferguson, on Kensington avenue. Mrs. Haw thorne has been visiting at Hood I River for some time but will arrive home this week. f ' A very successful cake sale was held at the residence of Mrs. Busey on Franklin avenue on Friday after noon. In spite of the inclement weather many were in attendance. The members of ' the English Lutheran Aid Society announce an entertainment and fancy work sale to be held in the Reed building the latter part of next week. The sale will be held during the afternoon and the evening will be given over to the entertainment for which a musical and literary program is . being ar ranged. ' Miss Irene Simington, a college student at Eugene, has arrived home to spend the Easter holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Siming Mrs. C. R. Higgins and baby daugh ter are in Portland, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Thompson. The Swedish-Finn Society gave a necktie social last evening in, the Idun Hall of Uppertown. The Tuchabachee Club members were charmingly entertained on Mon day evening by Mrs. A. D. Garner at her home on Irving avenue. The entertainment offered was in the form of an address on English Literature by Miss Oertrude Hulse of the High School. The club inn w .. aiuuiug The parlors were quite prettily dec orated with ferns and potted Easter lillies and the luncheon served was delicious. Miss Minnie Marks, of Long Beach. Wash., was an Astoria visitor this week. ' (!) The Nob Hill Sewing Club held a very pleasant meeting on Monday afternoon of this week at the home of Mrs. Alfred Leinenweber. Mr. and Mrs. G. Wingate enter tained the members of the Assembly Club at their home on Eleventh street in a delightful manner on Thursday evening. Six-handed euchre was played by way of amusement, all at tending enjoying themselves exceed ingly, uainty retreshments were served during the evening. ' The Monday Club members spent a delightful afternoon this week at the home of Mrs. Herman F. Preal on Ninth street. The ladies snent their time in entertaining conversa tion and with their needlework. Dur ing the afternoon the hostess served dainty refreshments. Mrs. Burlingame entertained -the" members of the Clover Club on Tues day afternoon at, her residence on Tenth street. The meeting was a pleasant one, all present enjoying themselves very much. ' The Young Men's League of the Presbyterian church held a meeting in the church parlors on Monday evening. The meeting was of a busi ness character and arrangements were gotten under way toward the giving of a May Festival of a musical nature, by the league during the hionth of May.
