THE WEATHER hope that a satisfactory understand ing can be reached in a compara tively short time as to the division of profits. An agreement between the directing genius with money and the man who actually docs the produc ing would mean the solving of one of the most perplexing conditions of modern life. There has been a mark ed tendency in recent years toward capitalists sharing their profits with the laborer, but the right of labor to demand a proportionate share of the earnings has never advanced beyond the platform argument. Profit shar ing by corporations, if generlly in augurated, would mark a new epoch in history and eventually put an end to strikes. Up to the present the laborer has struck only for increased pay, never for profits. If Mr. Taft's forecast is correct, we are on the brink of a contest which, will deter mine if the laborer who is worthy of his hire will get more than his hands actually earn, according to present and past custom Brooklyn Standard, AFT BR st glass i K r EASTER rtovelfv and i t ... v r ) ;, . Republican primaries on the Sena-j having exceeded the standards to torial issue pending, Democratic Ore gon has deliberately registered itself Republican, cast its primary vote for the weakest candidate of that party for the office; and at the real polls, on June 1st, will slaughter him with their stoutest man. A less in sheer politics that the indifferent Republican may nurture to his own partisan redemp tion later on. The alignment now stands, so far as the , Senatorial question goes, Portland versus the Democracy of Oregon. The Democratic candidate is known notoriously and heads his party in the State; the Portland can didate is known but is yet to be named, January, 1909, being consid ered quite timely enough for the reve lation, and the Legislature the logical place for the declaration and the fight. It is needless to say that Port land will put forward an invincible champion; and the battle will be the fiercest ever fought Portland has shown its hand in the work of Friday too palpably to hide its ulterior scheme of sending its own man to Washirtgton next winter; and the contending hosts will scrap it out beneath the slogan of Statement No. 1, and the equally pa tent defiance of a metropolitan Sena tor against the State; the battle-line including the adept Democrats, and the recalcitrant Republicans who will swarm to the Portland standard. If the sentiment for Statement Xo. 1, shall prove, by that time, to be too strong for the Portland man and doc trine, then it wil be quite as easyj and easier, for the Portland phalanx to swing squarely in line with the Democratic program, and send their man where it cannot send its own but certainly will not send a better from any other part of the State. INDUSTRIAL WAR. In an address to railway conductors in, Chicago Secretary Taft said that the country must look forward to i gigantic controversy between labor and capital, which would decide once for all how capital and labor shall share the joint profits which they create. The question is ages old. and it would be expecting too much to Rheumatic Pains Relieved. Mrs. Thos. Stenton, postmaster of Pontvoool.
