THE MORNING ASTOUIAN, ASTORIA, ' OREGON. WEDNESDAY, APRIL IS, 1008. F. A. FISHER'S TRIP OF INSPECTION HE MADE THE TRIP WITH PRESIDENT LEWIS RUSSELL OF THE PORTLAND AUTO MOBILE CLUB. N One of the matters of extraordinary interest, (especially to autoruobihsts and good road enthusiasts generally, which was considered at Monday nights very largely attended meet ing of the Chamber of Commerce, was the special report of Chairman F. A. Fisher of the Roads and High ways Committee of the Chamber on the trip of inspection he made from St. Helens to Mist over the proposed Portland and Astoria automobile route. ! He made this trip with President Lewis Russell of the Portland Auto mobilie Club and his report throws more light upon the subject than has yet been possible. Mr. Russell will be in Astoria in a few days and it ' now seems more than likely some automobile enthusiast will be able to secure more or less reputation for himself during the month of July or August by driving his machine all the way from Seaside to Portland. Mr. Fisher's report, however, speaks for itself. It is as follows: "I have to report that in company , with President Lewis Russell of the Portland Automobile Club I made a trip of inspection over that portion of the proposed, Portland and Astor ia automobile road lying in Colum bia County from St. Helens to Mist, a distance of 30 miles. "On Wednesday night, April 8th, I met Mr. Russell in St. Helens by appointment and on Thursday morn ing at 8:45 we left Houlton for Yank ton in a small rig, finding three and one-half miles of the road for this distance fairly good. It took us an hour to drive from Houlton to Yank ton, and at the latter place we learned that had we taken the road at Warren for Yankton we could have cut off about five miles of the distance. , "From Yankton we went to Pitts burg, which is 16 1-2 miles distant, arriving there at S o'clock P. M. For this entire distance the grade is very good not exceeding 20 per cent." and some narts of this stretch 5s I graveled while others are dirt and puncheon. On the whole excepting a few places the road between these two towns is not bad by any means. Of course, the puncheon road is the worst that can be put in for auto mobiles. "Leaving' Pittsburg we took the toria at an early date probably this week or next and go over bdth the Nchatem and Seaside roads with me and I would suggest that some work be done on our own road within the dy limits, especially around Smith's Point from the end of the Bond strec roadway particularly to fill up the ruts. A ditch should be dug and the sink hole repaired at the Christian Staughter House where I recently struck on my way to Seaside. There is no possible way to avoid this place. This is a good road but in bad repair. Tf the matter is called to the attention of the road master I am sure that is all that will be necessary. The plank ing across the tide land from Young's Bay dyke to the Lewis and Clark River is out of place but one man in a couple of days could repair this. And I feel that if the road master's attention is called to it, it would speekily be done and will assist in a most excellent cause, that of hurrying forward the entire good road from Portland to Astoria. Once this road is put in shape so that automobiles can come from Portland to Astoria the hotels especially in Astoria will reap a greater reward pernaps man from the railroad travel. Automo biles will make it a point to leave Portland on Friday or Saturday even ing and come through to Astoria and Seaside". YEARS' V EXPERIENCE 7i . ' i SAT Trade Marki ffl'1 CovnioMTa Aa. PAINTINGS TO BE RETURNED. r NEW YORK, April 14.-Rather than have the collection of paintings sent here by Russian artists for ex hibition at the St. Louis Exposition sold at public auction, the Russian government has arranged to have the paintings returned to Russia. This is the reason why the collection has been suddenly withdrawn from the sale at the stores. There are 472 paintings in the lot and they include some by the best artists of Russia. After the St. Louis exposition several of 'the original collection were sold and the appraised duty paid. Those not disposed of were placed in bond and there they remained. When the time came for their removal or the payment of the duty the government could not find an owner for them so they were advertised to be sold. Evervthinir was readv for their sale Toad to the left leading to Veronia, , when SU(i(ieniy an order was received five miles distance and we continued j from Washington ordering their re to find a good grade with the road, mova, from' the sa!e Mst an(1 their in about the same condition as it had ( immediate exportation. A good grade can be had via ! Keasey to Jewell and the distance reduced about IS miles by taking that route. This would mean that Colum bia County would have to build about ten miles of the road and Clatsop County about five miles, but after this had been done there will be almost a straight road from Portland to Astoria. "We left Veronia Friday morning at 7:30 o'clock with a two-horse team CUSTOM HOUSE, ASTORIA, .Oregon, Collector's Office, April 9, 1908. Supplies for Revenue Ves scls.
