The "Lady Isabel" or Ann Phillips, who, by the way, is one of the most charming little ac tresses ever seen in this city, was equal to any we have seen, and super ior to the interpretation given by most leading women. Credit is due the management for so quickly straightening out a bad tangle. The play is too well known to need any review but all members were up to the standard. In short, the "East Lynn" of last night was truly enjoy able. The announcement that the "Girl From the Golden West" would be given Thursday and the balance of the week, has caused some talk, as the play has been so much discussed during the past two years. Mr. Bell claims it will be the strongest play yet given. CHARACTER AND HEALTH. When it is made possible for a man to gain exact and valuable knowledge of his own health and character, and their "relations One to the other for his sole and certain good, then he is foolish who will not avail himself of the opportunity. Professor H. T. Griffeth, the celebrated character reader of Portland is in this city, and will (rive lectures each evening in behalf of these interesting and im portant human attributes. No one can afford to miss the chance-of such advice and information as he will give. Grand total 1978 2635 It will be observed that the City of Astoria is to be credited with 583 f the net gain in registration this year. "East Lynne" at the Star. Following a rather hashed up por trayal Monday night, of the rather melancholy list of incidents that go to make up the play "East Lynne," the production of the same play last jiight was a wit of mild revelation. Reports got around Tuesday that the Donald-Bell Company had put up a PARLIAMENT ADJOURNED. LONDON, April 7 Parliament has adjourned until April 14, to en able the issue of writs for the re election of new ministers so as to have the elections during the Easter recess. HOPPE WINS. A communication from Charles E. Foster, chief of the? fire department, making some sharp and salient rec ommendations regarding the condi tion of the schol houses was referred to the committee on buildings and the clerk was instructed to acknowl edge the receipt of the chief's com munication. It is quite likely that the "sharpest of the chief's recom mendations will be promptly acted upon. The report of Miss Barker and others was referred to a com mittee. There will be a convention of the county teachers immediately follow ing the teachers 'institute and Presi dent Homes was unanimously elected as the delegate from this city. Miss Elizabeth Mul len of Deep Creek, Wash., has been engaged and it is expected that she will report for duty on the 13th of this month. The matter of renewing the black boards was referred to the building committee. That James W. Welch has attend ed to the duty as the committee of one to buy flags for the several school houses is in evidence every school day. The committee was discharged. The teachers will be notified by the clerk to file their applications for positions for the ensuing year so that they may be acted upon at the next meeting.
