CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS Joseph R. Weill and His Gang Fleeced a Chicagoan Out of $2000 and the Latter Had the Courage to Have Him Arrested. CHICAGO, Mar. 24,-Jos. R. Weill said to be the leading spirit in the "Denver millionaires club" came to grief in Chicago yesterday. He was arrested by Sheriff Edward Kittleson of Rock Island, Illinois and taken to Rock Island to stand trial for being one of a gang of confidence men. It is said an effort will be made to connect him and his gang with the plot to blow up the Rock Island News office with dynamite yesterday. Edward Goodman of Chicago charged that Weill and his "Denver millionair club" fleeced him out of $2,000 on a "false" prize fight "Weill is one of the smoothest 'con raenwe ever arrested, said Detective Tobin who assisted in making the arrest. "Sheriff Kittleson told us he and his gang had fleeced Rock Island men out of at least $50,000 in the last year. The game worked on Mr. Goodman and all the rest for that matter was to arrange a bet on a prize fight They told Goodman they were a lot of Denver sports traveling through the country in a special car and that they had a "world beater" named Gorman who could whip any man in town. Up comes Kauffman who challenges Gorman to. a fight The promoters told Goodman what easy money it was and induced him to put up $2,000 on Gorman. The money was placed in a safety de posit box $.4000 in all. After the fight the winner of the bet was to get the key to the box. "The ropes for a genuine prize fight ring were strung and the men mixed. At the opening of the second round Gorman collapsed under a blow in the stomach. " His seconds declared he was about to die and everybody fled. "At a safe distance Weill said to Goodman; Give me the keys to the box and fly your kite out of town; that fellow may die and we all will be pinched. I will send you a check for your money tomorrow." "Goodman gave him the key but never got the check, The same game was worked on a Seattle man for $3700." HOW MARBLES ARE MADE. The. Enormous Number of. Them Used by the Boys of America. What becomes of all the marbles? There are 1,000,000,000 marbles brought from Germany to this coun try every year. This would give every child of the marble-playing age fifty marbles a year. No one can tell what becomes of the marbles, but it is an easy matter to tell how they are made. The commonest of all marbles are the "brownies." They are not made from clay, as most boys suppose, but from a peculiar sort of a sandstone which is found in the German woods. The stone is cut into squares by ma chinery. These are then distributed by the miller to the workman, who take them by the carloads to their homes. The process of grinding is primi tive in the extreme. Each workman has a machine about as large as a sewing machine. A treadle which is worked by the foot furnishes the power. The machine consists of two disks, one of which rests on top of the other like buckwheat cakes on a plate. In the center there is a round hole precisely the size of the marble which is to be made from the square piece of stone. Then the upper disk, which is made of wood, is pressed hard down upon the lower, and the treadle be gins to work. At each pressure of the foot the wooden disk revolves. With each revolution the edges of the stones wear off until the squares be come round, and at length the finish ed marble drops through the hole into the box below. China marbles are moulded from clay in factories where they are bak ed and glazed. These factories, how ever, are small affairs for the most part, and the work is done by hand and foot power. The clay is moulded in a foot-power press, and has two wooden disks which come together, but do not revolve. Rachdlsk Is fil led with semiround holes like that in one-half of a bullet mould. The up per one is drawn down and when the pressure is .removed the marbles are found lying in the cups on the lower disk, ready for baking, After the marbles are dried, baked and glazed they are sent to the pea sant painters. The painter's machine is a foot-power contrivance which looks like a turner's lathe set on end. -The painter dips his tine brush in paint and holds it to the marble. One revolution paints a blue equator on the little globe. Another brush and a second revolution paints a red tropic of Capricorn. Imitation agates are painted by hand and are dried in the open air. The paint is daubed on without much method. Glass "alleys" are made entirely in factories. The transparent glass is drawn out into a strand many feet long, by two workmen, very much as molasses candy is pulled. When it is an inch and a half or two inches thick it is allowed to cool, and it is then broken into pieces about two feet in length. On the sides of this strands of red, yellow, blue and green glass, as thick as a wheat straw, are fastened, and the whole is then re turned to the furnace to be heated over again. When heated two men take the strand in tongs, by each end, and begin twisting and s'reaching it until it is of the thickness of a marble. The glass is then heated for the third time, and when it reaches the melting point it is dropped into a series of molds. Real agates are made from agate which is found in Oberstein, near the Rhine. They are ground round, as lapidaries grind precious stones. In spite of -the fact that they are made from pieces of stone which are not suitable for the manufacture of jew elry they are expensive, costing from fifteen to twenty-five cents each.
