BON TON MILLINERY STORE GEORGIA PENNINGTON 483 Bond Street MEETING OF CLATSOP FRUIT GROWERS SOME OF THE BEST APPLES IN NORTHWEST ARE CROWN IN CLATSOP COUNTY -INSPECTOR C. S. DOW PRESENT. The fruit growers of Clatsop county met yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce rooms and interchanged ideas with each other and the fruit inspector, C S. Dow. Those present convinced them selves that some of the best apples in the northwest are grown in this vicinity. One grower who has owned and attended orchards here and in the Willamette Valley, made the asser tion that apples could be grown about Astoria cheaper than at any other place in Oregon. Home experience and observations of fruit growing in other portions of the State were discussed. It appeared that San Jose scale and codlin moth cause no trouble in this district It was recommended that lime-sulphur spray be used through the sum mer to destroy fungus growths, in cluding moss. Bordeaux mixture could be used in the winter while the trees are leafless, but it was dangerous to use after the leaves and fruit are on the trees, as it sometimes burned them. Whitewashing the trunks and large limbs was considered good. Pruning should begin early in the life of the tree by clipping back the branches so that there would not be large limbs to remove later, which injures the vitality and mars the beauty of the tree. Those present were urged to thin the fruit so that one apple shall not touch another. Drain the ground and fertilize the soii. A vigorous tree will also great ly protect itself from the attack of parasites. Some varieties of apples were said to be less subject to fungus growths than others. Mr. Dow stated that he expected to make an exhibit at Salem during the State Fair and wogld take the best that the county shall be able to afford. The next meeting will be on the first Saturday in April and all growers as well as others interested in the apple industry are requested to be present. 4 C C C C NOTICE. Astoria, Or., March 20, 1908. One family makes the cows, another the h.orses or goats, and still another the lions and ele phants, etc. Each family sells its pro ducts directly to toy agents who come periodically to buy the separate pieces. The manufacture of wooden ani mals is quite simple, but does not want for ingenuity. The work starts with a specially prepared circle or wheel of white wood, which is turned and grooved to make the outline of a pony, horse or deer. The toymakers slice these wheels as a loaf of bread is sliced. The roughly outlined pieces then pass into other hands in the family and by stages are gradually brought to a finished state. The Zapf Hardware & Furniture Company, of this city, has just put on the market the best and nicest baby go-cart for the money ever heard of in Astoria. It is the Allwin, and is to be had at the modest figure of $5.25. It is one of the easiest riders in carriages, and the baby that is indulged with one dimples all over every time it goes out. It runs smooth as silk and folds up till it is almost unrecognizable. Call and examine one before putting money into something not nearly, so satisfactory. The Allwins are all winners, sure enough! PERSONAL MENTION FIRST TRAIN GOES TO SEA. The dream that Hencry M. Flag ler began dreaming ten years ago, of uniting Cuba to the United States by an all-rail route to span the 200 miles of narrow seas which separate them, has just passed the greatest stage in its transformation to reality. So writes M. B. Claussen in the Techni cal World Magazine for April. The first section of the remarkable "sea going railroad" which Mr. Flager has been building for the past three years is now completed to the temporary terminal at Knight's Key, 109 miles south of Miami on the mainland and forty-seven miles from the ultimate end of the line at K:y West. On the same day that the passenger trains of Mr. Flager's road the Florida East ! Coast Railroad began running through from Jacksonville to Knight's Key the Peninsular and Occidental Steamship Company put on a direct boat service from Knight's Key to I Havana, 115 miles away.
