SAVED BY THE MUD.
Exciting EUphant Adventure In the
' v Heart of Africa,
During a hunting trip In Africa A.
Heury Savage Landor had a narrow
escape from two elephants which he
was stalking. lie had got to within
ton yards of the male elephant and,
taking careful aim, pulled the trigger.
The story of what followed la told In
Mr. Landor's ook "Across Widest
Africa:"
The cartridge never went off, but un
fortunately uiy kresh, who relied on
the effectiveness of my weapon, fired
at the same moment with his match
lock. We were such a abort distance
from the animal that he actually hit
him in the head. I shall never forget
my surprise when the elephant lifted
his trunk skyward and In his fury
roared like thunder. t
A moment later the elephant, with
his trunk extended, dashed after us, L
too, with my useless rifle in my hand
having by that time acquired a high
rate of speed.
Bad I been running a race for the
world's record I am sure I should have
won the prise. . It waa amaslng to me
how fast I could run, as I confess my
blood turned perfectly cold whea l
could feel the hoarse blowing trunk of
the elephant only a few rods behind
me, and I expected every minute to be
crashed Into a Jelly. . .,
In that particular part of the country
these marshy plains are extraordinarily
sticky and slushy, so the moment I
dashed into the grass at the record
breaking speed at which I waa travel
ing my feet stuck In the soft and slushy
mud, and I was precipitated with my
face and hands in the slush, my rifle
sinking deep.
This was the supreme moment of ap
prehension. I said good by to the world
and Imagined myself dead. No one
could have been more surprised than I
was when, a reasonable time to be
kilted In having elapsed, I got up again
and perceived the elephant a few yards
off, cantering away in the opposite di
rection. ,
His back view was a great relief to
me. He bad come to within two or
three yards of where I had fallen and,
having himself sunk In the soft mud,
had turned around and struggled away,
leaving big circular footmarks, regular
holes four or five feet deep in the mud.

One of the local officials of Chicago
tells of a plnmber's apprentice who on
his wsy to work one morning called at
the office of the health authorities and
made known his wish to register his
father's death. When the clerk asked
the date of the demise, the son replied:
"He ain't dead yet, but he will be
before night I thought It would save
me another journey If you pat it down
now." ,
"That won't do at all," said the clerk.
"Perhaps your father will live for a
long while yet"
"Well, I don't know," responded the
apprenUee doubtfully. "The doctor
says he won't, and he knows what be
has given him." Harper's Weekly.
He Won't Always Be On.
"I have a clerk," a New Tork whole
sale merchant remarked the other day,
"and be sometimes manages to hand
back a rather good one, though, as a
rule, he is little short of stupid ap
parently. As a matter of fact, I sup
pose he la one of those dreamy sort of
chaps, and you never can tell about
that kind.
"I was sorry after I said It," he con
tinued, "but recently he had made a
most unnecessary blunder, and I lost
my temper.
"'I say, Jones,' I sneered, you'd
make a pretty good clerk maybe if yon
bad a little more sense.'
"He looked at me for a minute with
a sort of half smile. 'Didn't It ever oc
cur to yon, Mr. Brown,' he said, 'that

SWEATERS FOR DOGS.
"I spcnt the winter in St. MoriU,"
said a western girl. "In that white
town, 6000 feet up among the Alps,
everybody wears a sweater. Skat
ing, ski-ing, coasting, if you are not
clad in a white sweater your dress is
incorrect.
"The prettiest, quaintest thing
there is the way all the dogs wears
sweaters too. A sweater is just the
thing for a dog. Fitting tight, leav
ing the legs free, outlining the grace
ful body, it is at once comfortable and
becoming.
"And in St. Moritt all the dogs
wear sweaters. Bull-dogs, dach
shunds, collies, fox terriers, each
capers about in the white snow in a
white sweater."
A severe cold that may develop into
pneumonia over night, can be cured
quickly by taking Foley's Honey and
Tar. It will cure the most obstinate
racking cough and strengthen your
lungs. The genuine is in a yellow

Store.
DAYS OF DIZZINESS.
"Bidding His Last Goodby."
Almost a Dozen.
"Tea," confessed the pretty girl to
the orange hat, "be said be was dying
for a kiss."
"And what did you say, dear?" asked
her anxious chum. ,
"Oh, I told him he should practice
self restraint-told him every time he
felt like stealing a kiss he should
count ten." ,
"And did he emmt ten?"
"Yes. The first thing I knew the
goose had counted ten klsses."-Chlca-go

There are days of dizziness;
Spells of headache, sideache, back
ache; Sometimes rheumatic pains;
Often urinary disorders.
All tell yon plainly the kidneys are
sick
Doan's Kidney Fills cure all kidney

Here is proof in Astoria.
Mrs. E. Haggblom, corner Ninth
and Harrison streets, Astoria, Ore
gon, says: "For 10 years I suffered
acutely from kidney trouble which
gradually grew more severe until I
was on the verge of physical break
down. I was losing flesh rapidly. My
back was so weak and painful and I
suffered from such severe dizzy spell
that I could hardly get around. At
last I was forced to take to my bed
and remained there for a long time.
My kidneys were irregular in action
and the secretions so profuse as to
cause me a great deal of suffering.
At last I decided to try a good kid
ney remedy. I procured a box of
Doan's Kidney Pitts and the results
that followed their use were most
satisfactory. I continued using them
and it was not long before I was
completely cured. I have used Doan's
Kidney Pills on some occasions since,
to keep my kidneys in good order and
can conscientiously say I have not
had any recurrence of the trouble
Doan's Kidney Pills cured me."
