PHONES-711 AND 3871 BRANCH PHONE-713 URGING VAN DUSEN'S L REMOVAL AT A HEARING BEFORE FISH COMMISSIONERS AT, SALEM, MASTER FISH WARDEN H. a VAN DUSEN WAS ROUNDLY CRITICISED. The Salem Capitol Journal in last Tuesday's issue says: "Accusing Master Fish Warden H. G. Van Dusen of incompetence and partiality, which has resulted in over 75 per cent of Oregon Columbia river fishermen taking out licenses in Washington, F. A. Suffert, F. N. War ien and Walter W. Ridehalgh, this afternoon, before the Board of Fish Commissioners, urged his immediate removal from office, and the appoint ment of a fair-minded successor. Governor Chamberlain this morn ing informed H. M. Lorntsen, Ed. Rosenberg and I. J. Kearns, repre sentatives of the lower Columbia fishermen that the board would make mo recommendations to the voters of the state without first getting the opinion of. experts of both the state and government, which is impossible at present Rosenberg consumed the entire morning session presenting TEETH Without Pladt. 0 the Old Reliable CHICAGO PAINLESS DENTISTS Cor. WNRROR (Continued from page 1) evidence to the board showing how the upper river wheels were ruining the salmon trade. The upper river canners recommend the appointment of Herman A. Webster, of Oregon City. A Salem special to the Portland Journal says: The political rays are turning on the office of Master Game Warden. The present holder of the position, H. G. Van Dusen, isolated, almost without doubt, to lose his official head because of alleged par tiality toward upper Columbia river fishermen. "Van Dusen arrived in the city yes terday, and, under the protection of a consort of lower Columbia river fish ermen, who are ready to use their every effort to have him retained in his position, went direct to the gover nor's office to find out 'what was stir ring.' Van Dusen's retinue consisted of Ed. Rosenberg, secretary of the Fishermen's Union of the Pacific; H. M. Lorntsen and I. J. Kern, all of Astoria. "If they thought they would over whelm the governor and the remain der of the Board of Fish Commis sioners into agreeing to retain Van Dusen, they were mistaken. The board, which consists of Governor Chamberlain, Secretary of State Ben son and State Treasurer Steele, re fused to hear any arguments until representatives of the upper river men could be present Consequently F. A. Sufert and F. N. Warren were communicated with, and agreed to come here today. "Regarding a successor for Van Dusen for it is the unanimous opin ion of the board that he should go no one has been generally selected, though Charles Babcock, of Oregon City, is the strongest candidate at the present time, he practically being already endorsed by Treasurer Steele. This endorsement is more than has been done by either Chamberlain or Benson, neither of whom have yet advanced a name. "It is the unanimous opinion of the board that neither an upper or lower river resident be selected. The fol lowing names have been handed in to the board with recommendation for appointment: J. U. Campbell of Ore eon Citv: Herman ' A. Webster of Oregon City; Charles Babcock of Oregon City; H. C. McAllister of Portland; W. A. Mack of Portland. Both Governor Chamberlain and Sec retary of State Benson remain non committal, refusing to express their stand but Treasurer Steele asserts that he will uphold an Oregon City candi date against all others, and as Camp tipll ha retired from the fight in favor of Babcock, the latter has be come the strongest for the patronage of Steele. Campbell desires if Bab cock be not chosen he still be con sidered as an applicant. Next to Bab cock, H. C. McAllister appears to be the strongest candidate, standing well in the opinion of Benson. The latter, however, has not decided upon any one to succeed Van , Dusen, and states that he will vote with the re mainder of the board, if possible, so as to make the appointment a unani mous one." the fiery odds that prevailed.. 1 Both died in the flame and the body of; one is yet visible in the smoking and smouldering ruins, ' The citizens made desperate efforts to get at the imprisoned men, but without avail in the face of the fierce fury of the blase that enveloped the whole house at once. , Details are wanting owing to the fact that Cathlamet is, of all the towns on the lower river, the only one without telephonic and telegra phic communication with the outside world; but it is known that the house cots in the neighborhood of $4000, and with its furniture and contents, was good for another $1000, and that a rrrtain volume of insurance was carried on it. The neighboring houses were badly scorched and were only saevd by the most strenuous efforts on the part of the citizens. Astoria is full of sympathy for all concerned in this loss and tragedy and if she has had any sort of oppor tunity, would have sent all the aid in her power. Full particulars will be at hand today, and will be published in the next issue of the Astorian. 2 OF PersonalKnowledg n Iff Do Fish Feil PalnT flow sensitive to pain are flshT A correspondent writes: "1 have a small pond which Is stocked with trdtit. AMITE, La., Mar.U.-The stniii- ed political situation in Louisiana democratic circles was last night re sponsible for the killing of Democra tic State Senator Elect D. S. Kemp of thin city. He was shot and killed by C. F. Hyde, a young political and business leader of this section. Yesterday the men quarreled about the recent democratic primary for Lieutenant governor in which J. J. Bailey and Paul Lambrcincnt compet ed with the result that Bailey, the de feated candidate, filed a protest charg ing fraud with the democratic state central committee. Hyde, in discus sing this controversy, is alleged to have called Kemp a liar. The friends of both men considered the incident trivial and it had apparently forgct ten until last night when Komp walk ed into Hyde's place accompanied by a friend. Hyde was unarmed, Kemp, still keeping his revolver in sight, demanded an apology, which was re fused. Kemp is then alleged to have slapped Hyde's face. The senator's friends at this point interfered and separated the two men who there upon agreed to meet and fight it out with revolvers. Senator Kemp then left and Hyde went into his house nearby and secured his revolver. When he came out he shouted to Kemp to wait for Jiini, .which the Senator did. The two approached each other and Hyde opened fire, two shots fatally wounding the Sen ator who died within thirty minutes after the shooting. Hyde was not injured and witnesses claim that Kemp did not shoot. Senator Kemp was a man of mid dle age and Hyde is 24 years old. Hyde had not been arrested up to an early hour to-day. Without It ths Hfst of ths Sun Would & Unbearable. The usefulness of dust Is proclaimed by science despite nil the IioumcwIvos of all the ages. Dust Is pnrt of the Ma chinery thnt produces cloud and rain It Is also a protection from the sun. Without It the sun's rays would be un bearable. The reason that sunburn Is more easily acquired on the mountains than In the lowlands Is sold to be prob ably because of the comparatively durKli'Hs ulr of the mountainous re gions. A dustlms atmosphere during rain would meuL a much greater degree of dlucoiufort than rain ever brings. Trees and buildings would be dripping with moisture, our clothing and the exposed parts of our bodies would be constantly wet. umbrellas would be classed as useless curios, and Instead of trying to conquer the dust in the lioune we s no ii Id have to face a much greater enemy In wet floors and drip ping walls, lu every drop of rain and In every particle of cloud there Is a particle of dust A samplo of air may be taken auywhere and the number of Its dust particles accurately determin ed. Dust, too, produces the glorious sunset effects In the evening sky, thus causing the faint obscurity we call twilight. - Twilight Is always a reflected glory. The light comes from tho sun, which has lu the meanwhile sunk below tho horizon. The reflector Is an upper layer of dust Were the air pcrfoctly dustless there would be no twilight. Darkness would immediately follow the sunset Exchange. FLEET REPORTED. SAN DIEGO, March II.
