The matter wat cloed about a year ago, the wife having ccured her decree, and the motion to et aside was interposed by the husband., It was ably argued by the gentlemen at bar, Messrs. A. M. Smith, for the husband, and Mr. Murphy, of Port land, for the lady. Kind Wordi Still The latest Issue of the Willapa Harbor Pilot contain the following pleasant comment anent the Astor ian' recent special edition: "The Morning Attorian last Sunday Issued a handsome 32 page 'Investor and Home-Seeker' Edition' which it one of the most attractive special editions that ha come to our table In many months. The form and make-up i pleasing, the press-work excellent, the cut numerous and interesting attractive and the tubject matter well and interestingly written. The many natural advantages of Astoria and ihe surrounding country are convinc ingly et forth and the edition should prove a splendid advertisement for the community." A Busy Place Clatsop's beautiful court house was a scene of activity yesterday; the sheriffs force were deeply engrossed with the reception of tax monies pouring in by mail and from the hosts of personal visitors that flocked there steadily all day long; and the hall and corridors and offices resounded to the hummer of the expert work men putting up the fine new furniture that ha Just arrived, the sheriff, treasurer's, and county clerk's offices being particularly in line of embellish mcnt on this score yesterday. The new oak desks, counter and fixture, with their white .marble plates and bate, make a handsome and bar moniou finish to the structure and will last the life of the building it elf. Mr. Leathera Improving Inquiry at the home of R. M, Leath er alTord the cheerful intelligence that that gentleman it getting along all right and will be out in due course at well at ever. He was resting quite easily yesterday evening and gave every sign of steady recovery, Must Answer In Tims Lottie Lewis, the ncgrei who is charged with slashing Effie Moore some day ago, will have to plead to some grave accusation in a few day, if 'the condition of the Moore, woman improve and he recover to a point of safety. Just what the nature of the formal charge is to be ha not yet been announced by the district at torney's office. Distinguished Guests Among the visiting Knights of Columbus on Sunday last were noted, Hon. John B. Coffey, representative from Multnomah in the Oregon Leg islature, .and Rev. Father Lane, of Albany, fate of this city, and highly I respected here. Alderman Drucoll of the Portland council, wa also pre sent, and was gladly greeted on all sides by old friends in Astoria. Sent to the Head Fisher Brother Company ha sent one of it capable and popular em alovecs to the head of the concern j .11. O'ConncIl having been made manager of the business to fill the vacancy caused by the death of r. a Roiiers. It i fitting mark of apprechv tion to Mr. O'ConncIl for the years of faithful service he has rendered and the commanding skill he has acquired in the business of his principals. Did Big Business Sheriff M. R. Pomeroy and his as Utants. four alt told, yesterday is sued 180 receipts to the tax-paying public, and took in the round sum of $10,000,, a "right smart", beginning for this particular line of work. And It i very suggestive of the amount of work these men will have to do in the next fourteen days. It was a rousing piece of work, when com pared with the first day of Mult nomah's tax collections which began a month ago, when Sheriff Srevcns, with 25 clerk only handed out 300 receipts. Meeting Night Changed There were a number of .people asking why the Chamber of Com merce held no meeting last night, hot knowing, apparently, that the meet ing? nights of that body have been changed to the second and fourth Monday night in each month in stead of the first and third. It is an excellent idea, and gives the dozen or more prominent citizens who are members of the Common Council as well as of the Chamber, an opportun ity to attend the latter and take part in public business: in which they are all interested to a greater or lesser extent. Well Known Here The sad newt reach this city yes tcrday of the death at Salem, Oregon, of the Hon. Tilinon Ford, one of the leading lawyer of the ; Wilamette valley and a member of one of the pioneer families of the State. Mr, Ford was a bachelor, an ardent stu dent of hi great profession, a dc voted traveler, and died possessed of a handsome competence. He was 67 year of age, and died at the home of hi friend, partner and kinsman, W. H. Kaiser.. Mr. Ford ha many friends in this city who will regret to hear of hi demise. A Bad Bog-Down A heavy truck, laden with fijel oil, bogged down at the intersection of Eishth and Astor yesterday forenoon and was several hours in extricating itself from an ugly position. It took two or three teams to work it back to terra firma. Pleasure and Profit The coming of the Portland Knights of Columbus to this city, on Sunday last, 150 strong, via the fine steamer T. J. Potter, proved to be one of the features of the season hereabout. Just as the Morning As toria published the schedule for the day and night, so it went, happily and successfully, the new council, As toria, No. 1307, was instituted with 50 members, insurance, and social, and starts on its career under the brightest auspices. The . Portland fraters did not get away on the Pot ter until 1 o'clock yesterday morning; and they went charmed with the splendid reception tendered them by their Astoria brethren. ft For VICTOR OR AN EDISON PHONOGRAPH goto . ohnsoAnograpii Parlors Second Floor Over Bcbolfield ft Mattson Co. Hanlin, who will conduct it in the future. Mr. Hanlin is an old and experienced theatrical manager and a very successful one; and it is on the cards for Astoria to see and hear all that is of the best in entertainment. The Morning As torian wishes Mr. Hanlin success throughout his venture in this city.
