Tel Main 24C1 TO BE THIS COMING SUMMER Will Invite the People of the Province of Alberta to Attend the Interstate Apple Show the Last Week in January, 1909. SPOKANE, Wanli., Feb. 22.-IIon, M. McKcnzie of MacLeod, a member Of the provincial government of Al berta, is in Spokane to arrange with. the chamber of commerce to run an Inland Empire excursion to the vari oin cities and towns in that province during the gram harvesting season next summer, after which 4he com mercial bodies of Alberta purpose visiting Spokane and points in the ter rifory tributary to It, in which the value of mining, lumber, grain, fruit and live stock products, exclusive of manufactures and imports, aggrcgat ed $133,500,000 in 1907, or $267 per capita of a population of 500,000. Mr, McKenzie, who was a guest of E. J. Cannon, counsel for the North crn Pacific railway, at the last weekly meeting and luncheon of the board of trustee of the chamber of commerce, where he outlined his plans, adding that upon his return to Canada he will confer with William Whyte, first vice president of the Canadian Pacific Railway company, to arrange for ade quale transportation facilities. He added: ' "My purpose in presenting this sub ject at this time is to bring into closer affiliation and association the business men and producers of Northwestern Canada and the Inland Empire. Our interests are mutual and we have much in common; in fact, I may say that the real development of the Houndary mining district was made by Spokane capital and enterprise. There are several men in Spokane who have become millionaires as the result of their investments in pro perties along the southern edge of western Canada, and a number of our people have amassed fortunes in your timber, fruit and agricultural belts." Mr. McKenzie will immediately make arrangements with the Various commercial organizations in the pro vince of Alberta to join in a formal invitation to the Spokane organization to visit them some time the coming summer. K. E. Goodall, president, and L, G. Monore, secretary of the chamber of commerce, who are now in southern California with a party of 225 mer chants and professional men, will take up the matter on his return. Mr. Monroe, who is also secretary of the Washington and Spokane Country Horticultural societies, will invite the people of the province of Alberta to atend the interstate apple show under the auspices of the Spokane country society the last week in January, 1909, which gives promise of being the most pretentious of its kind ever at tempted on this continent George B. Dresher, assistant sec retary of the chamber of commerce, announces that purses aggregating $10,000 will be hung up in the com petitions among apple growers in Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and British Columbia, in addition to which will be blue ribbons and troph ies for exhibits from outside the state. Expert horticulturists in the employ of the government and the Washington State college, will visit the orchards in June to enlist the co operation of growers. The purpose is to interest orchardists, not only in the Northwest but throughout the country, to grow better and cleaner fruit, for which the demand and prices were never better than they are today. BASKET BALL. SPOKANE, Wash., Feb. 22.-T. G. Cook, director of the Spokane Ar mory Athletic association, has offered the Y. M. C A. basket ball tfam of Muscatine, la, the choice of three dates, March 17, 18 and 19 to play Co. A team on the former's tour of the Northwest and the Pacific coast next month. The game will be played in the armory, which has accommoda tions for 5,000 spectators. During their stay in Spokane the visitors will be entertained by the at hletices of the city.. The Muscatine team asked for a date with the five of the Young Men's Christian associa tion early in the season, but were turned down by Physical Director Cowley, who was under the impres sion at the time they were profes sionals making the tour for the money in it. It has been shown since then, however, that every man in the team is a registered athlete with the Am erican Amateur Union. The team is making a record this season, winning a majority of the games. Director Cook says the local team is in excellent condition and is ex pected to make a good showing. The five won a number of fast games over stronger teams and has a large num ber of wins to its credit. . , THE 3 DR.. for fiijfii & ArjD mm AND ALL THRAT Arm DISEASES . . . inn a a Rfinsi PREVENTS pnain II UUUVbliiUiiUUUal nnPTion "Two yean ago a aerere cold settled on mj lanes and to completely prostrated me that 1 wa unable to work and scarcely able to stand.
