The affair took the form of n masquerade party with tome charming costumes and excellent make-ups, Twentythree guests were prrent and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the time. The hostess terved unique refresh mcntt and evening wai pawed in playing game and with music. Captain and Mr. Nathan Burk holder were given a charming tur prise party by about 31) friendt on last Saturday evening, Five hundred wat played and the prise-winners on thit happy occasion were Mitt Minnie Knutsen and Mr. Harvey Tillctton. Mrt. Emil Palmberg "was hostess on Tuesday afternoon for the mcm bert of the Clover Club. The Udiet' Aid Society of the First Lutheran Church wat pleanant y netcrtained on Wednesday after noon by Mr. John I'cterion at her home in East Astoria. Mint Lola Foard i visiting friend in Tacoma thit week. Mr. and Mrt. Bernard Limlenbcrg e'r and little ton Bruce have returned from a three weeks' visit in Portland. A number of the ladict of the G. A. R. were entertained on Thursday afternoon by Mrt. C. W. Lamar at her home on Seventeenth street and Jerome avenue. Five hundred was played and all present had a delight ful time. During the afternoon the hostess served dainty refreshments. The Monday Afternoon Club mem bers met this week with Mrs. V. E. Tallant and Miss Tallant at their home on Grand avenue and Sixteenth street. The jngagemcnt of Miss Hildagard Brunold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bruuold and Mr. Joseph L. Moore was announced on last Sunday. The wedding will take place almost imme diately, The young couple are well known in Astoria, each having a large circle of friends and acquaint ances who join in offering congratula tions and good wishes. The members of the Dorcas Society of the First Lutheran Church held a tocial and business meeting in the church parlors on Friday evening. During the evening the ladies engag ed in an oldtime "Quilting Bee." Re freshments were served and an excel lent musical program was rendered. Those present had a very enjoyable time. Miss Gertrude Upshur returned from Portland on last Monday even ing from several days visit with her uncle, Federal Judge Hunt. Miss Anna Wcdcking of Astoria and Mr1. Emil Lang, of Portland, were united in marriage on Monday after noon, January 27th by County Judge Trenchard in his private office in the new court house. The annual Inspection and muster and a general "Get together" social will be held on next Thursday even ing at the First Presbyterian church. An excellent program has been pre pared consisting" of addresses by prominent men and musical selec tions by the best talent in the city. Everyone is invited to attend and a special effort will be made to have every member of the church present. Following is the program prepared: Music by the orchestra; address, "Good Citizenship in General," May or Wise; solo, Miss Hobson; address, "Churches and the New Astoria," J. II. Whyte; solo, Mr. William Gratke; address, "Sociability and City Build ing," C. H. Abercrombie; male chorus. Miss Mable Monroe arrived down from Portland on Friday evening's train, 'she was joined at Cliftrfn by her father, Captain Monroe and to gether they will maken over-Sunday visit with their family t 826 Grind avenue, A number of Astoriant are making preparations to attend a ball to be given on next Saturday evening, Feb ruary 8th, lit Deep River.
