It was not long after this that the financial panic of 100T came on, and every one was scrambling for retidy cash to meet his obligations. Btevpo Hathaway exerted every means to keep the firm on Its feet, but It was a lone pull and a hard pull, and before tin ilnlsh the old nmu was well nigh ex bauated. One day Ethan Bull of the firm of Lyon & Bull came Into the oltlce o! Hathaway A Co, and demanded pay ment of $10,000 due his firm, Wbe.'. Mr. Hathaway senior begwed for tluio. Bull stormed and blnatered. thrtateuln to put tho Arm luto bankruptcy If tlif money was not paid within twenty four hours. He left, saying that he would call the next day before bank closing and that If he did not receive n check for the whole amount no would execute his threat That night the head of the house of Hathaway A Co. went home physic ally and meulally in collapse. Beu went with blm. put him to bed, sent for a doctor, and when be came askod him to forbid the iuvalld to go back to his office for several weeks at least. Tbe doctor compiled, and Ben breathed easier. The next morning Ben walked Into the office and announced that he would fill his father's place as manager. Thin did not lessen the dread with which the office force looked upon tbe situ ation, for the young man bad never managed any business, certainly not In such trying times. It happened t be the worst day of the money squeezo One hundred and fifty per cent wan bid for money, aud none to be had. About 2 o'clock, when securities on the stock market were crumbling and ruin stnred everybody but tramps ami beggars in the face, Mr. Bull walked Into the counting room. He stood six feet one, weighed 20C pounds and had a neck like his name sake. Ben kuew well enough that bin object bad been and was to frlghter. his father luto straining every nerve to raise the means with which to pay his account The expression of the cred Itor's face was like that on Japanese Imnifes of their (rod of war. "Where's Mr. Hathaway ?w he asked In stentorian tones. "I'm Mr. Hathaway," said Ben, rut Ing from his father's deak and nd vanclng, with a pleasant smile. "I sup pose you have called, Mr. Bull, for your account I regret that owing to the locking up" "I wont my money," roared Bull, "and if I don't get It I'll pull this bouse down on your beads." Before the last word was out Bn had tackled him, and In an Instant he was on the floor. "One down!" said Ben. Bull got up and, with redhot blood in bis eyes, went for his assailant In an other moment be bad resumed bis place on the floor. This time bis fall was aggravated by Ken's falling with all bis weight on top of him. ; "Two downs!" cried Hathaway Jun ior, disengaging himself and Jumping up. Mr. Bull took more time than befora to get up, but when on his feet mnde r. drive at Ben with bis right which, had Ben been there, would have hurt him. Without waiting for a second drive Ben gave bis enemy his flut aud iunilet! him again on the floor. Then, jumping on blm, he held blm down. "Thrco downs!" he said. , Ills enemy made a few feeble at tempts to rise, then lay still. "See here, Mr. Bull," snld Ben. "If you'll promise to leave this office peace ably. I'll let you up." "Yes, I'll leave this office," panted the prostrate man, "and I'll go straight to my lawyers, and tills firm will have a receiver right off." "In that easo you mny get your mon ey in a few months or a few years, but there will be another account you'll have to settle with me ns soon as the papers are served. I'll give you a thrashing compared with which this will be a. pnsslng zephyr. Get up!" Mil. jumped off hlra nimbly. Bull smme with tlllllculiy and, Instead of go ing for his enemy ngnln, stood glaring for n moment at the offlce force look ing on, thii Hi rued and wont out kIu mining the door behind him. Whether Mr. Bull disliked the pros, pact of another settlement or concluded be had better wait for his money we do not know, but he did not press his claim. la another week Mr.Ttnthiway sen ior returned to bis oftles and resumed tits place.
