V THE COSTA RICA LEAVES OUT DANGEROUS CRIMINAL ARRESTED. 6AN FRANCISCO, Jan. li-Edwin Starr, alias Joseph Murphy, and dozen other aliases, said by the New York police to be a dangerous criminal, m taken into custody by the police on Fillmore street yesterday and is being beld awaiting advices front the police of New York CHy. Starr has been missing from New York for some months and is wanted there for Uie specific crime of grand larceny, although it is said there are many crimes which could be charged : against him once he is in the custody of the eastern police. The circular letter sent out by the New York police which led to his arrest says that Starr has twice broken jail once from a station bouse in New York City and again in Paterson, N. Jan. 19.-The Poo In ternational Centennial Society formed today for the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of, Edgar Allan Poe, January 19, 1909, has decided to offer a prize of $500 for the best poem memorializing Poe, written by a non professional writer, preferably a college student. The society also proposed to preserve the Poe Cottage at Fordham, N. Y, and to erect a memorial to the poet known as the American Pantheon in which may also rest memorials to other American authors, painters and actors. " , Bead the Morning Astorian. She mill proceed up he river and loaj grain at Portland. The steamer Breakwater is due to leave here on Tuesday morning for Coo Bay. From North Head yesterday morning at 8 o'clock the report came that the wind was from the east and blowing 20 miles an hour. The weather was cloudy and the bar was smooth. At that time a four-masted bark was reported live miles south and a' three-wanted bark was 10 miles west, heavily loaded. At noon the report showed the wind bad shifted to the southeast, the velocity being the same and the bar still smooth. At 4 p. m. the wind was from the east, still 20 miles an hour and bar conditions the same. The barken tine J. M. Griffith, came down from Stella, where she haa been loading lumber. She is ready for sea. The Catania came in yesterday morning at 7:30. She left up at 9:30 a. m. The German steamer Gvrmanicus ar rived in the harbor yesterday at noon and shortly afterward proceeded up the river at 3:15 p. m. She had a load of lumber aboard from Aberdeen and will finish her cargo at Portland. The Colonel E. L.
