' CASH ONLY, FROM NOW ONI The Oregon Press Association at its meeting in Portland on Friday last unanimously agreed that "cash talks" from this time onward, especially the cash of the politican who has been do ing business on "partisan sympathy," "hot air," bases for unnumbered years. Promises, pledges, dickers, tentative schemes, buncomb of all sorts, are cut out eternally, and the good service of tie newspaper will find its tangible re ward in a business way, as all other de sirable commodities are acquired. The plan puts all aspirants upon an equal footing at once and leaves the paper free to do as it pleases without reproach, without fear and without the necessity of crouching under party wings until it smothers. It puts the wares of the press on the market in pal pable shape at an honest value, and establishes a precedent that has been sorely needed. The ordinary newspaper does more gratuitous work in the course of a year than any business in the world of like investment; and it is high time its standards were being placed along side the other recognized commercial eriterions and decent compensation made for unequivocal service. We are glad it has come to pass! ' . .. o 1 ONE MORE EFFORT. There will be issued from the presses of the Morning Astorian in the course of a few days, a very complete and hand some compendium of the utilities, at tractions and opportunities of Astoria and Clatsop county; a Md-Winter edi tion of this paper containing interesting and illustrated articles on every conceiv able phase of industry and interest that can be nicely handled in the compass of 36 pages such as we ordinarily issue. It will deal honestly and largely with the beet elements of progress and pros perity and promise, in, or allied with, this city and county in fact, it is an other genuine effort to place before the world the myriad facte that should be known of this whole section of Oregon. 60 complete will it be that it should figure promptly and widely as a stand ard reference for all things Astorian and Clataopian. It has been heavily an ticipated and will be despatched with -hoe conviction that it is the best of it kind ever put out here and bound to do some good! " 0 INHERENT RESOURCES. t It may be that Astoria and Clatsop are to move to the front of the commer cial line-up by right and influence of in herent resources, sudh, for instance, as oil. The special committee of the Chamber of Commerce has been quietly at work for several months securing land leases and now has between six and seven thousand acres upon which to make detailed in vestigations as soon as the drilling ap paratus shall have arrived from the East. . The work of testing this territory will be in the hands of an expert and there is a deep and quiet hope that the abundant signs of this valuable depend ence may prove true and give this sec tion a new and powerful agency for de velopment and acquisition. It is only through some such medium as this that we will ever make a start and come into place commanding enough of outside in terest to compel the initiation of other organic enterprises. HUGHES' INDIFFERENCE Governor Hughes' administration Of the affairs of Kew York State has been so unique and successful, from a popu lar standpoint, that there is quite suf ficient warrant for the endorsement the people everywhere have given him for the Presidential nomination; but hi indifference to the subject is too pecul iar and pronounced to be overlooked. He does not teem to care a hang whether he get it, or not ; he says nothing and does nothing to indicate that he it aware of the fact that he is even considered. This may be a new political stunt of his, but is hardly likely to be commend ed by a people used to having their gifts appreciated and recognised. He is a good man and a strong one. but he is not the only man of this quality in the country and may have cause to regret the stand he has taken, unless his indifference shall be of a kind to sustain him in the event of his subse quent shelving at Chicago. 0 LOCAL ATHLETICS. The final reorganization of the As toria Athletic Club is among the really whoksome items of the week's sum of news; and everyone wishes the new line-up complete success and such occasional victories as may come by way of special effort and aptitude in contest The re-establishment of the dub is a boon to the boys and young men of the city, physically, morally and socially; gives them a pleasant resort and some thing to think of beside the idling, un compensating indulgences of the hour on the street and elsewhere. It is an excellent balance-wheel in the civic mechanism of a city of this siae and should be encouraged on all sides and by every father of a son, who desires to see clean, healthy and am bitious results of this sort. And when the time comes we shall be glad to see an annex for the girls and young women who need the training as much as any one. O0 EDITORIAL SALAD. ID The Bank Of England has reduced its interest rate from 7 per cent to 6. It is still high enough to indicate that the financial problem is not confined to the United States. A newspaper has undertaken to de scribe the Central American conflicts for eight years, and starts off bravely with a three-column paragraph. The serial will hardly reach a finish during the present generation. It is said that legislative issues are born rather than made. Congress little expected when it met to be confronted with the questions of anti-money in bul lets and quinine in connection with the .navy biscuit. , It may be set down as a safe rule that the Democratic papers find the most fault with the Republican candi date they consider strongest But H won't do to trust their Judgment, for Bryanism hat weakened it sadly. Having provided official berths for two of his family, Senator Davis will try to get a government appropriation of $5,000,000 for Hot Springs. Mr Davis shake-up of the Senate is also a shakedown of the country. FOWLER BILL REDRAFTED. It has been decided that the width of the Panama Canal shall remain at 100 feet, which is greater than that of any existing ship. If the sea is to be filled with bigger leviathans, Uncle Sam will agree to enlarge the canal. Atreadv the views and desires of the majority of the members of the com mission, are known and the work of tho commission in making any changes in the last year's Fowler bill for presenta tion in- the present session of congress probably will be completed in a single day's session. According to the earliest arrivals for the inference, the action bids fair to be as harmonious and unanimous as that of the conference of a year ago, when the American Bankers Bill, later incor porated in the Fowler bill which was presented in congress, was accepted un animously and recommended enact ment, Ine outcome of the conference probably will be the redrafting of the old Fowler bill with several minor change suggested by the provisions of the Aldrioh and other propositi cur rency measures. The Fowler bill in general is declar ed to meet the approval of bankers throughout" the country. The Pur Food Law. Secretary Wilson says, "Ons of the objects of the law it to inform ths con sumer of the presence of certain harm ful drugs in medicines.'' Ths law re quires that the amount of chloroform, opium, morphine, and other habit form ing drugs be stated on the label of each bottle. The manufacturers of Chamber lain's Cough Remedy have always claim ed that their remedy did not contain any of these drugs, and tho truth of this claim is now fully proven, as no mention of them la made on ths label This remedy ia not only one of the safest, but one of the beat in use for coughs anj ookls. Its value has been pores be yond question during the many years it has been in general use. For sal by Frank Hart and leading druggist DIED FROM EXPOSURE. SYRACUSE, Kan., Jan. 18.
