Worthless Checks Suspected The First National Bank in this city received a letter yesterday from Ilwaco stating that two well dressed young men had attempted to pass worthless checks in that city and failing to do so had com( ojv&j to Astoria. The police were notified, and it was discov ered that an attempt to pass a check wase made in this city, which was also a failure. The police will keep their eyes out for the suspects and in the mean time it would he advisable for those cashing checks to be careful in doing so. Elder Leaves for Frisco Repairs on Rajore Completed Notes There was trouble with the wires1 west of Warrenton yesterday and it was 4 o'clock p. m. before any reports could be received from the bar. At that time the wind was from the west, the velocity beoing five mites an hour, the weather clear, and the bar rough. There was 3-masted bark coining to wards the bar. ' The schooner Alice M. McDonald, which loaded 600,000 feet of lumber at Stella, Wash., cleared at the custom house yesterday and is ready for sea. The steamer Geo. W. Elder arrived down yesterday at 10 a. m. and left the Callender dock at 1:30 p. m. for San Francisco and San redro. The repairs on the British steamer Rajore have been completed and she was towed into the stream, yesterday after noon, where the balance of her cargo was put aboard, yesterday evening, lit is thought that she will be able to leave out by Tuesday. The lighthouse tender Armeria will leave out this morning at 7:30 to place two saa buoys. One will be placed, if weather conditions permit, to mark the station held by lightship No. 60, which was recently damaged in collision with the Port Patrick. The other will replace the gas buoy recently reported as being lost. The French bark Gutbrae, which was delayed here by the fouling of her anchor, was freed and left up at 2 p. m. yesterday to Portland in tow of the Henderson. The German ship Reinbek was towed up for Portland yesterday by the Harvest Queen. The Sue IT. Elmore sailed for Tilla mook at 2 p. m. yesterday. Pilots Swanson and Layton are on the pilot schooner which is outside. The steamer Melville yesterday after noon succeeded in recovering the anchor of the Guthrae which was cut away in the fouling In the stream. The Lurline came in yesterday with a good cargo of local freight and 1500 sacks of wheat for the Rajore. After unloading the local cargo the Lurline pulled into the stream alongside the ship and the wheat was transferred. The unloading was completed in time to per' mit of the Lurline getting away at her usual hour, 7 o'clock. The British steamer Caithners from La Paz, was outside yesteday and, ac cording to orders delivered to her by the pilots, she proceeded to Puget Sound. The British steamer Stafthfillan came down the river yesterday at noon loaded with grain and flour for the Orient, The schooner Irene, from r Itedonda, arrived in yesterday afternoon. ' The British bark Miltonburn, is in the harbor loaded with grain for fcurope. . ,. , - The Oriental steamer Arabia, 18 days from Hakodate has not yet been sighted. Although two days overdue, no anxiety is felt for her safety, as si is a staunch vessel and has been particularly fortunate since . her launching. She is expected at any time. WJien the steamer Tallac comes down from Portland, she will be in command of Oflpi, Lundquist, of San Francisco, He will take the place of Capt. Hansen who is ill in Portland, though recover ing. v? The steamer Nome City collided with the draw pier of the Morrison street bridge at Portland yesterday. The draw was not Opened as quick as wai expect ed by the captain and the current taking him threw him broadside against the pier. No damage was done to the steamer or bridge though a sailor had hii hand mashed by being caught be tween the rail of the steamer and the pier. No on else was hurt.
