Copper King Deposed From Mercantile National Bank. NEW YOHK. Jan. 8. Unable to meet payments due on his stock in the insti tution today, F. Augustus Hcinze lost control of the Mercantile National bank, the conduct of which, as its president, had brought about hi arraignment in tho United States circuit court, earlier in the day on charges of over-certifica tion. One year ago Iiciuze bought the controlling interest from Kdwiu Gould, with whom he pledged his holdings, as security for his promise to pay for them in full within one year. NEW YORK, Jan. 8 According to the monthly circular of the National City Bank $276,000,000 in cash disappeared between the call for the condition, of the national banks responded to last August and the one last month. This includes a net reduction of $41,000,000 in the cash holdings of nil the national banks in the country and a loss of $13,000,000 cash reported by the New York Trust Companies, together with the known ad ditions to the circulating medium during this period, including $100,000,000 of gold imported from abroad and $72, 000,000 cash released by the United States Treasury. In this colony, notable for its members who were high in political, so cial and financial circles of San Francisco are J. Dalzell Brown, former general manager of the California Safe Deposit Co., W. J. Bartnett of the same institu tion and former vice-president of the Western Pacific Railroad, and James Treadwell, a prominent mining man and director of the wrecked bank. The trans ference of Ruef took place today when Sheriff O'Neill, who 'was disqualified by Judge Dunne, went out of office and SheriH Dolan was installed. The sending of Ruef to the county jail met the opposition of the bribery graft prosecution and was done despite the efTorts of his friends. The district attorney's office, it was said, was apprehensive of Ruef having an opportunity to associate with Schmitz lest obstacles be thrown in the way of the prosecution in the bribery cases. Judge Dunne was obdurate however, and at noon today signed the order dismiss ing Iliggy as elisor. DEVOTES LIFE TO LEPERS. Young Belgian Will Make Home on Molokai Island. NEW YORK, Jan. 8.-Determined to devote his life to the care of the lepers in the cokmy of Molokai, Hawaiian lalands, Vincent Masoin arrived in New York yesterday from Antwerp. He is only 21 years old and will spend a year in the college at Fair Haven, Conn, be fore he will be ordained a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Masoin is a graduate of the University of Lonvain in Belgium and decided to devote hi life to the lepers after reading" of the lie nt Molokai of Father Damien, the priest who sacrificed his life on the bar ren island from which no one returns. Mr. Masoin, who is an athlete, ruddy faid, jolly young man, saya be expect sooner or later to succumb to the dis ease, but trust he will be spared long enough to do some good for the prisoner on the leper island. STEAMERS COLLIDE. Seminole Drag Anchor and Carries Acres Bow of Oil Steamer. SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 8. The Standard Oil Company tanker Ashta bula, 'which arrived from Mororan, Mon day night, reports that on December 10, when lying at anchor in Mororan, a strong northwest gale sprang up and caused the British steamer Seminole to drag her anchors. The Seminole wa carried across the bow of the Ashtabula and Collided with the tanker. In the col lision several plates on the starboard uarter of the Seminole were stove 'in and she was otherwise damaged. The Ashtabula's stem and hawser pipe were also damaged. MORE ITALIANS KILLED. A rule, giving the bill to revise, codify and amend the laws, the right of way, along with other preferred meas ures, was adopted, the reading was laid aside long enough to permit Gaines, of lennessee, to address the House m favor of the appropriation for "The Hermitage," the home of Andrew Jack son, near .Nashville. Adjournment was taken until tomorrow. KRAGEN'S ASSIGNS. Big Department Store of Bay City Goes to Walk SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 8. The big department store on Market street, which went under the name of Kragen's went yesterday into the hands of an as signee nominated by the Board of Trade who will take charge as soon as minor, j formalities are complied with. The firm is reputed to be in debt to any extent from $250,000 to $400,000. ' The principal creditors are in the east. The Board of Trade has nominated C. R. lfavens of Murphy, Grant & Co. as the assignee. The value of the assets are unknown, but experts from the Board of Trade are now at work on the books. Pardoned by the President the Notorious Violator Of the Land Laws is Again Charged With Subornation of Perjun Bailed Fixed at $3000, SALEM, Jan. 8. S. A. D. ,Puter, the "Land Fraud, King," who was released from jail in Portland on Monday and immediately re-arrested on a charge of subornation of perjury in connection with school land transactions in this state, appeared before Judge( Burnett in the state circuit court today and was immediately re-arrested on two addition al count involving the same charge. Puter had furnished $1000 bait on the first charge and mill be required to fur nish $1000 more on each of the other counts. PEOPLES' ASSISTANCE. LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 8.-Caleb Powers today issued a statement asking the people to sign a petition praying for his pardon on the ground that he was tried unfairly three times and that at the last trial 10 jurors voted for his ac quittal. LAND FRAUD TRIALS. HELENA, Jan. 8-iFeJeral Judge Hunt will leave for Portland Saturday to pre side at the land trials.
