Residents of Metropolis Organise Against Food Stuffs Combine Subway no Longer a LoJglng House Plat of Land Lus Idle in Crowded New York. NEW YORK. Jan. 4. -The anxiety that tins prevailed among t ho clerks in the offices of big corporations, broker' age Turns and banks in the downtown .!ini,'i was relieved this week when the mutual distribution of the yearly Nmuscs occurred. As a rule in these oilives the clerks, and even the heads of departments, receive small salaries but these are brought up to a very attrac tive figure by cash di-trihutions made at the en 1 of the year, One prosperous firm oi private bankers for several years lias distributed New Year gift of 100 per cent to all its clerks to that an employe whoso salary -was nominally JloOt) really received $30iK) a year, It was feated, on accjunt of the October panic and t!io tightness of the money market which "till prevails, that this Urges would be entirely cut tlf or irrcatly reduced this yeaf. When the end of December arrived and the usual bonuses were handed out in practically all of the office, there was consequently irreat relief amon- the worried one. The steel corporation with its army of clerks and junior officials a uiual b-d the way in the amount disbuiMed and it is said that $3,000.0(10 was handed out to the men in the office of this one concern in recognition of its successful car. The leading bank, and trust com panies have maile ;-it'ts i f from 10 to 50 per cent of the year's salary to their clerks according to the amount of bnsi rcs shown by the yearly balance taken on December 31. J. P. Morgan & Com pany, conservative in this as in other matters, follow the mile of distributing 10 or 15 per cent of the yearly salaries, according to the length of service of the employe and it is understood that the usual custom 'was observed this year. Altogether it is figured that $10,000,000 or over Iim been di-tribudd by offices in the downtown business section to clerks an! other employes. The sum is well iiji to the usual figure and this is interpreted as a further sign of re stored confidence nmon,' the financial and business Interests. cum puny, rreunrick Joseph, to reveal the present holder of the majority of t be stock, of the company 'which he aoinirivl in 1VH7, a thlttj which he has so far- steadily refused to do. AH sorts of start ling alligations are made con cerning the methods of the trust In eliminating competition and absorbing would bo Independents even aplnst the will of the latter. It Is altered for example that Mr. Joseph acquired the majoilty of the slock of the New York Uuichers' Dressed Meat Company mere ly a an ajjeut of the trust for the pur pe of turning It over, and that be previously left at least one other Inde pendent company elsewhere because It was thought that he, was acting In the capacity of a trust agent. The minority stockholders who are bringing the ac tion because of their desire to know just what Mr, Joseph has done with his stock further point out 1 tint this stock which at the time of his coming lo the com puny had a fixed value, has now no sale whatever. The consuming puhliu of the city looks on the move ment with approval as It Is willing to welcome, any plan holding even a faint hopt. of more reasonable price for Its incuts. When earth's last whopper is landed, and the trout streams are shrunken and dried, And the oldest fish yarns are faded and the younge-t liar has died, We shall rest, and faith we shall need it lie less for an aeon or two Till the master of all good fishers shall set us casting anew. And fhoac that caught fish shall be happy; they shall wade in a golden stream, And catch trout of solid diamonds the kind that yon land in a dream And shall have the experts to post them Izaak and Grover and such And a million trout at a wading shall not be considered too much. And only Ike Walton shall praise us, and only Ike Walton shall blame, And no one shall fish for money, and no one shall fish for fame, But each for the joy of the fishing shall fish in his separate star, And his bait jug shall never be empty, tfor the good of the thirsts that are! That New Yorkers live too fast, worry too much and do i;ot exercise enough is the conclusion of the Hoard of Health in its attempt lo account for the great increase in the numticr of deaths from heart disea-c in the metropolis in re cent years. While Father Knickerbocker is represented as a staid old gentleman, his children as indicated by figures are literally racing toward the grave. Cov ering a period of more than ,40 years these figures indicate in a staggering iind unexpected manner the rate of in i rcase of deaths from, nervous strain of the racking, rushing life of the world's busiest city. Nearly tiOOO persons have found the htain of the modern mode of living and working in New Y'ork too great and succumbed to heart disease during 1007 showing an increase of l.WO over the year of 100(1. That this sur prising total and appalling increase is due to the killing rush of the city ii the verdict of practically all the health officers. The seriousness of the situa tion is indicated by the figures which show that wtjile deaths from many other diseases known as mortal against which preventive measures can lie taken have shown a steady decrease, deaths from organic heart disease, the result of worry and overwork, have shown a steady and unprecedented increase. "Rushed to death" would seem to lie rapidly becoming an appropriate New York epitaph. The subway Is no longer to tie a nickel lodging house for persons who,-by paying a single fare, have been able to sleep all night In the ear while the trains run up and down the line, Early In the history of the subway It was (lis covered by the underworld that, Instead of shivering nn park benches a far more attractive and comfortable manner of pa-sing the winter nights was to pay a nickel to get Into the subway and then ride In lighted and heated ears ss long as desired, an. arrangement made po' sildc by the system of changing from local to cxpre-s trains, fine could liter ally ride forever for five cent, with plenty of newspapers dropped by other passenger to read ond the entleh g chance of picking up a valuable bundle forgotten by some other traveler. A a result nn onny of "subway sleepers" sprang up, many of whom waited for certain guards with whom they were familiar to insure a peaceful rest, giv ing them In return a clg.tr or a dime. At the height of this practice it was estimated that subway trains were e. comiuod.iting liwiv sleepers than even the biggest hotel In the city. But as usual a good thing was worked to death and hereafter no one can rbli farther than the end of the line without the payment of another fare, and would -he sleepers will hereafter be rudely thrust forth into the night. The subway will furnish transportation but nob sleeping quarters. s The curious discovery hits ju.t been inude that there is a plot of ground in the heart of New York which has never had a building on it and has conse qiiently produced no return to the on er since the Island of Manhattan was inhabited by the Indians. Nor Is It a fivak lt except In this respect, but a respectable area 00 by 00 feet. Located nt Fifty-eighth street and Eighth ave tine which is smith of Central Park and just about the center of the population of the city, the plot has through cen tiiricw remained Idle, while adjoining loU were selling for thousands of dol bus a front foot, The unearthing of the information concerning till unique lot is due to the ivcording of its transfer by its millionaire owner as a free gift to his son. The former owner who has held for many years has always refused offers for it although they have been frequent and large. The present holder refuses to divulge his plans concerning this interesting piece of ground, and o it remains to be seen whether an abso lutely unproductive plot will continue to exist in the center of the world's busiest city. Every once in a while New Yorkers, alarmed at the ever-increasing cost of living, rise up in rebellion against one or another monopoly in foodstuffs. Now it is the beef trrns-1 that is the object of an uttack in which the independent butchers of the city are leading the way. Several years ago these independ ent dealers organized themselves into an association known as the New York Butchers' Dressed Meat Company, Now they have awakened to the fact that apparently the big packers of the trust have secured control of this concern and that, if this control is not broken, the trust will have absolute control of the meat situation In New York, To find out whether this is the case they have begun a suit through the minority stock holders to compel the president of the Morning Astorian, CO cents per month Hildebrand & Gor Our clearing sale runs the year through.
