Lion in Bronx Zoo Creates Mnch Ex citement 'XKW YORK. Jan. 2.-Kose, mother or grauflmother of practically all the lions in the Hronx Zoo, created an imineusi- amount of excitement for a holiday crowd yesterday by roaring and ruh ing up and down her cage and clawing at her head. After considerable dim eulty the keepers discovered that Kos had driven one of her her fangs into a piece of bone and was unable to de tach it. She could not close her mouth and in her rage and excitement caused such consternation that the keepers ha the lion house cleared. With the aid of an elephant hook the piece .of bone was Anally pulled off the tooth, but not until its sharp edges had painfuly torn th lion's mouth and throat. She left Valparaiso on De cember Oth. it mmmm ,'Ths British steamer Glenstrae, draw ing 25 feet of water, passed to sea yes terday morning at 9:43. She had been awaiting favorable conditions for 1 days. The Breakwater came down early yes terday morning and passed out to sea at 0:45 a. m. for Coos Bay. The steamer schooner Northland left here, for- San Francisco, yesterday morn Ing at 0 a. m. The gasoline schooner Kvie came in from Nehalem yesterny and tied up at the O.' Jones, formerly of the Delia, assumed command of the,Elvic at noon and will hereafter tread her bridge. v , The Sue H. Elmore will leave for Coos Bay this afternoon at 2 o'clock On her up trip on New Year's night the steamer Lurline met with an acci dent near Brookfleld, Wash-, resultinz in the breaking of her wheel. She man aged to reach Portland in her crippled condition, but too late to enable the Undine to be put on her run yesterday. There was no boat up last night as a result of the accident but today the Undine will be placed on the route and trips be resumed. It is thought that some drift, of which there is a great deal in the river, struck her wheel caus ing the damage. 1 . The ship Rajore, which was moored at the Can Company's dock, while her damaged cargo was being removed, broke loose yesterday evening at 6 o'clock! and -tfor a time it was thought that serious results would follow. She was tied up to the wharf with eight steel cables, and the receding tide, to gether with the strong current now run ning, caused her to tug at her fasten ings until, in sequence, every cleate to which a hawser was fastened was pulled clear of its bolts and the vessel drifted away from her berth, to a point about the middle of the channel, where, her anchors fortunately holding, she now floats. The San Gabriel, which was lying just below the Rajore, had a nan row escape from collision, but the aet of the tide and current carried the ship free of danger from that source. About 500 tons of the Rajore's . cargo had been removed, and she is that much lighter, but no fears are entertained from that source. , . , ;' r $5&22 TO New York via O. R. N.
