It is now al most certain that the "Raven" mantle before which Edgar Allen Poe sat when wrote his masterpiece will go to Columbia University and find a place of honor in Hamilton Hall. The keen con test lor this notable memento of the peat poet, in which many of the liter ary and educational institutions have Tied has now been narrowed down to Wm. Hemstreet of 1332 Bergen street, Brooklyn, the owner of the mantle, to Colombia University , and the Hamilton v uiwkivu. .-iniong tne tne ap plicants for the mentle were the Uni Tersity of Virginia, Poe's alma mater: tte Franklin Club, the literary organi sation of Philadelphia, headed by Dr. a Weir Mitchell; the Museum of Nor wieh Free Academy, Norwich, Conn and the Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences, the American Science and His loric Preservation Society, and the Poe Society, all of New York. Mr. Hcmpstreet offered the mantle to erne public institution which would probably preserve it. Columbia is in the neighborhood of Poe's old home on Mth street, where "The Raven" was written. Mr. Hemstreet bought the relic m ma, when the house of the late Wm. Brennan, father-in-law . of General James R. CBeirne was being torn down. This temporary home of Poe stood on Mlh street between Amsterdam avenue and Broadway. SAN FRANCISCO.
