In a plrited delmte iiKjn the U-ne "Which Wlirk the Harder, the Farmer, or the Farmer" Wife,1 and the'glrla won out easily. Some of the argument tubmitted from em-li aide were very funny, and it I a grave que tlon U either the farmer or hi excellent wife, ever heard of nme of them. VAGEANT THOUGHTS OF AN IDLER PROMISES THAT THE NEW YEAR HOLDS FOR ASTORIA'S PROSPER ITY NO LOSS HAS OCCURRED Hf THE PAST YEAR. The iiuw year holda a perlfhj promic of a Dplcmlid hotel (for Atorla, anyway. Ono that will eol, when cmpleted and furiiiidied, around the 4150,000 mark, and will put Aatorla'a metropolitan plug jut a few hole higher. It alo k'ara the aurance of the newcxt and moat magnificent court boue In the atate, if or county purpoe, and thi advantage will accrue even earlier than the hotel. This make over J:MI),OO0 wth of Improvement that we wot of; an ettimate not to be m-fxed at in the ftrat hour of the first duy of the lOOHth year of the ChrUlan era. H I not certain, yet, that Mr. Gar laud ha entirely overlooked thi port, in hi calculation for a new tamhip line. A review of the pat 12 month of Atiiil' history reveal nothing In the way of Io or detriment in a commer cial way. We have more than we had 'Mi day ago; people, money, busine, and prospect. And thi U a good thing to remember. We'll have atill more, :13 day hence. The name old bunch of reaolution were worn to yesterday; they ' expire by limitation on Sunday next. No excep lion.. Among the exMdimit thing for A toria in IH08 I a nolutlon of the lumber rate problem; and. the application of the "common point" on wheat to the port of lAatorfa. 'Astoria generously ' tender the use of her euperb and roomy bay to the port of Portland whenever the hitter Amis use for the ships she cannot an chor or dock up there. There'a nothing "narrow" about thi port nor it people. It I said that the Hill terminal busi nesa at the mouth of the Columbia is to be located at Frankfort, opposite this city, and that the grain from the Ill land Kmpir is to reach there over a continuous line of Xorthbank rail, to be built at. a cost of $IS,000 per mile from Kalama westward.' Thi informa tion I entirely gratuitous and lack nothing but Jame J. irill'a "O. K." Also, the A. A C. It. R. yatem ia to be extended San Franciaeo-ward at once. Mr, Hill'a ignatur haaa busy yenr ahead of it. The city of Astoria ha two election hilled for the present year. There is much to engage the deepest thought of the elector. Hi (franchise wa never ao valuable a it will be thi year, if he ue it with dlawimfnatlng Interest and devotion to the common good of himself ami hi fellow. . There are to be chosen a President, a Governor, a Mayor, ataff of State, County nnd City office, all along the line M publlo aerrhse. Don't forget it; and atart your thinker right now! The Chamlier of Commerce is going to pry some thing loose this year. Let every Astorian stand pat, and pray some, too. One Piano Number FREE with each $5.00 Purchase.
