From Spokane the distance to Astoria 5 85 miles the shorter haul by the a t i 1',; and by the Xorth Bank line, 67 miles the shorter. t From Lewiston, via the O. B, & K the haul is 85 miles the shortest and over the Xorth Bank tracks, it is 93 miles in favor of Astoria. And from Kennewick here, over the North Bank route, the distance is 67 miles to the good; using always the port of Seattle as a basis in the calcu lations. Upon the same plane, it must be remembered that this port is just 135 miles nearer to the great open sea, than is Seattle, since its inner or Eastern boundry, is fyut 15 miles from deep water. Let these figures sink into your cur rent scheme of facts, such as you use daily in the expediting of your business, and sometime durinjr the year 1908 we will recall them to your consideration as having an expressed utility in active and compensating use. There is no use disputing these con' elusions: figures do not lie even at the behest Of prejudice: They have long been known in quarters nearest to their value in demonstrated form ana a score of millions of money already in vested say they are exactly and happily true. A Miner Miul from Sheridan, Myo., tells ot the raiding of the eWisner sheep camp near Arada by 10 masked cattlwnen, who, after driving away the herder at the point of a riile, exhausted their ammunition killing sheep, shooting more than 800 of the animal. The sheriff is in pursuit of the marauders. The sheep are alleged to have crossed the dividing range line. A REAL WONDERLAND. South Dakota, with its rich ailver mines, bonanza farms, wide ranges and trance natural formations, is a verit able wonderland. At Mound City, in the home of Mrs. E. D. Clapp, a wonderful case of healing has lately occurred. Her ton seemed near death with lung and throat trouble. "Exhausting coughing spells occurred every flvs minutes.'' writes Mrs. Clapp, "when 1 begaa giving Di King's New Discovery, the great medicine, that saved his life and completely cured bim." Guaranteed for coughs and colds, throat and lung trou bles, by Chas. Rogers druggist. 60c. and $1.00. Trial bottle free. SCRAP-DAY IN CONGRESS. last was "scrap-day" in Old Mother Nature is taking it out on the neoole who are invading her hid den realms in Western Pennsylvania and Virginia these days, as within the past month she has killed 600 miners in that territory by gases and fire-damp, These records read bitterly to the people all over the country, and particularly just at this season of universal happi' ness and flood iwilL Yet in any guise at any time, wholesale sacrifice of human life is the saddest of all news. We be lieve that the fearful happenings lately heralded to the world are purely the irresistable expressions of nature whose elemental forces have broken through the careful limitations set up by man, and that man himself has had no part In u wfnl work. The owners and Thursday Congress. There is always one day of tne ses sion iriven over to snarls and rows and fisticuffs and the general expression of the normal man. It seems to be rulable at Washington and is always looked for bvi the country .... We imagine the current session is to be marked with a good deal of asperity, however it may assert itself, as there is an abundance of contentious matter to serve as predicate for uproars and vicious contact. It is "presidential year" and that alone invariably contributes Dlentv of room and cause for political 1 r . set-to-, knockingdown and draggingoui flmone tha dinnified solona we havo sent up there to maintain oup sectional ritrhta at any and all hazards. But. all tMngs considered, tins is infinitely better than the line of re course had over in Germany and France, where such encounters do not end on the floors of the parliaments, but are carried to the outer "fields of honor," where the gun and pistol take con- SpiCUOUS lace m ine nnai aruiirnmeiii., and sometimes with really serious re sults. Such a course here would fur nish tragedies without end, for the American does not take up his weapons for such a purpose unless he uses them for all they are worth. We are fortun ate in that the Congressional scraps are confined to the bloody agencies of tongue and fist. . 0 ORDER VACATED. XEW YORK, Dee. 20. The motion made by the Western Union and Postal to vacate the order obtained lat June bv the attorney-general, looking to the commencement of suit to dissolve these companies was granted by the supreme court todav. The attorney -general in tended to commence suit on the ground that the two companies had entered into an agreement in restraint of trade. Bad breath has probably broken off more matches than bad temper, and that's a good many. The best cure for bad breadth is the tonic-laxative, Lane's Family Medicine. BREWING PLANT BURNS. BUTTE, Mont., Dec. 20. It does not contain poisons or harmful drugs. Druggists sell it. J. E. Henry, formerly in the employ of C. V. Brown, has tendered his resigna tion, and will probably engage in other business.
