For the benefit of the general public the State Board of Health Regulations about the duration of quarantine are giveu below: Scarlet Fever Isolation until com plete desquamation or sealing ha ended (about six or eiaht weeks from onset of disease). At eud of this time dUinfect patient and premises. The rule and regulations of Ore gon State Board of Health, published July, 1903, contains the following paragraph about Scarlet Ffver: ' Isola tion of patient and quarantine of chil dren associated with or in the house with the patient for ten days after complete desquamation or scaling of patient, and disinfection of premises. It will be readily understood,, that tjhe" quarantine during Scarlet Fever must necessarily be of long duration. The latest regulations state, that the pro cess of scaling off or "pealing" will take from 8 to 8 weeks and the regulations of 1003 iwent o far as to stipulate a lapse of ten day after complete "peal ing," before the quarantine could be safely lifted. The reason is, that the "pealing" Is the most dangerous time as far a contagion is concerned, and as long aa pealing is not completed in the fullest sense of the word, the broken and unbroken old skin must be con sidered as multitudes of disease germs, which at any time may attack any young or old person. - Quarantine and disease are always un welcome guests and I have always tried to be as lenient and considerate as was consistent with the safety of the com munity. As the period of pealing is the most catching', I have always maintained that if any compromise should and could be allowed, it must be before peal ing has begun. When once begun," com promise ends, then everybody must remain in quarantine until pealing is completed and even then a' little longer, or ten days. To lift the quarantine, before the pealing is completed. when there atill are- some patches of old skin on the back of the hands, would be to scatter the disease-germs broadcast. Fortunately, the present caes of Scarlet-Fever are, of a very mild form. But this disease is very treacherous, as the mostni alignant and fatal cases may appear side by side with the mildest forms in the same family. The duty of the physicians generally and the health officers specially is rather more to pre vent disease than to cure it and in the performance of th duty the physician should have the fullest support of all good people. Those who have been placed under quarantine should be thankful, that the disease is a very mild one, and that their children have been saved, and the best way to show their grati tude Is to .comply strictly with the quarantine regulations. The rules and regulations of the Ore gon State Board of Health has made six weeks the shortest limit of quarantine in Scarlet Fever and as long as thj regulation ha not been withdrawn Or amended, it will be enforced in every case, no matter who the patients are or how well they may appear be'"ore the limit of six weeks has expired.
