A ft THE MORNING ASTORIAN, : STOMA. OREGON. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER n, 1907. RIVER AND HARBOR VRoanoke Arrives in From the I Lower Coast MOVEMENTS OF GRAIN SHIPS Armeria Out for Puget Sound-Cost k Rica Depart Senator Due Tomor V. row Local Boat News-Bar Crossing ?j Few Yesterday. ft The bar was doing some of its high Ujiuks all of yesterday, and was a bit too .Irough for the steamship Mackinaw, jgrain laden for the Bay City, to leave ;ufc ' l The steamship Costa Rica left the "!b. R. ft X. pier, for sea at 9 o'clock ,:,esterday morning, and went over the ;jbar at high noon, on her voyage to the Bay City. The Standard Oil tank steamer Col. E. . L. Drake, came in over the bar at 1:30 ! o'clock yesterday afternoon, and at 2:30 passed the city on her way to the me tropolis. She was loaded deep with oil. .1 The British vessels Wavertree and Miltonburn, whkh dragged their an- 'chors and got onto the sands of the lower bay, on Monday morning last, i have been safely returned to the chan- : nela, absolutely none the worse for their "touch-downs." The handsome lighthouse tender Col , i umbine ias fooled lots of ,er friends, by coming back from her recent Alaskan trip, all painted in funeral black. She left here white as snow, and the change - was made at Seattle. Her officers claim ' it makes a great difference in the task ' of keeping her clean; but all the same it - does not add to her beauty. The British barks Duehalburn and 1 Miltonburn, sister-ships and fleet-mates, will leave up tomorrow for Portland (or -a perhaps .-not until Friday morning), where both will load grain out for the I United Kingdom. The Miltonburn was 1 under orders for Seattle, but toe orders '- were changed yesterday, and she now goes up the riverj as 1, of course, the properest thing. The fine steamship Senator has at last been chartered for service on the Port-land-Astoria-San Francisco line, and left the Bay City yesterday at noon, for this port. She is iu command of Cap tain Nopander, and has a good list of passengers aud wads of freight. ihe I an exact duplicate of the "late, lament, ed" St. Paul, and though a alow boat, i splendidly appointed and very com f 01 table, and a big carrier. She is due in tomorrow. The 0.R.4X. steamer Harvest Queen came "down early yesterday morning and fastened 011 to the big French ship Europe, which was waiting for her off Tongue Point, and swung back up the river for Portland where the Europe will load grain out for the United Kingdom. She had hardly made fast, when the Oklahama came down and took the Crillon in tow, on the same errand, and started back, both getting underway be fore 7 o'clock in the morning. The fine steamship Roanoke docked at the Calender pier at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, after a stormy trip up from Port Los Angeles. She had a big list of passengers, two of whom disembarked at this port, the Mis Hilma Johnson and Alice Carr. Her officers report the sighting of the French ship Lillibone, dismasted, off Punta Reyes, on the Cali fornia coast, headed for San Francisco, under jury rig, and making fair pro gress. While the Roanoke was lying on the mud flat at the entrance to the harbor at Eureka, where she touched in going out and was compelled to await high 'water, a passenj.fr from Los Angeles, and a well known citizen of that place, became over-anxious to land, and as the officers refused him a boat to the shore, he peeled off his coat and vest, took a header over the side, and started to swim for the nearest shore. A passing boatman picked him up, and took him to the city, from which place be tele graphed to Purser Simpson to ship, or bring back, to him, there, his trunk, suitcase, and the clothes he left on the deck when he made his arbitrary plunge. It Is needless to say that "booie" was at the bottom of the affair, which might have ended disastrously for the sport, but for the fisherman who was passing at the time. Mr. Simpson will see to it that be gets all his belongings on the return trip. The Roanoke left up for Portland at 'noont and will be down, on the outward voyage, at 8 o'clock on Saturday mowing next. The flagship of the lighthouse fleet in this port, the Armcrla, went to sea and Seattle, yesterday morning on the early flood. Captain Gregory ha some work to do at Destruction Island, and some other visits to make and will be ab sent the better part of a month. "Bus ter Brown, the pet dog of Dr. Vaughn, of this city, was a passenger out on the Armeria, as the "guest of Chief Engi neer Startup, and will eat hi Thanks giving "Urncs," in the metropolis of Puget Sound. He has hi well knowu collar on, bearing the inscription, "I am Doc. Vaughn's dog, whose dog are you?" and it is the intention of the Chief to quietly let "Buster in the office door of Dr. Foley, a college mate and old-time chum of Dr. Vaughan's and then watch Foley che all over the city looking for Vaughn. At all events, thert will be fun for somebody, with "Buster" in j eluded. j The steamer Northland arrived down j from Portland last evening with an .immense load of lumber for the Bay City. She docked at the Calleudcr pier and will go to see sometime today. i """" , I The North Head wires were not work ing yesterday morning, having been .downed in the storm of the night prev ious; but they were soon in working order, and in the interim, Weather Observer Kelliher walked into Ilwaco, and wired over hi reports, both clima tic, and marine, which Is just what one might expect of that wise and accom modating officer, The Lurline was a bit behind her schedule last night, but got away for Uie metropolis in fair season with plenty of business. The Astoria n, 00 cents monthly. The Commercial, 1 The Commercial still continue to do a good business. The finest grade of different kind of refreshments kept at this well known establishment assure a continuance of its popularity. The pro prietor, Otto Sund, is a genial gentle man, and 1 well and favorably known In this city. Drop Into the Commercial when in the neighborhood. It t on Com mercial street near Eleventh. delivered by carrier. Had a Narrow Ecpe Andrew Larson, of Chinook, had a narrow escape yesterday, from drown ing, that will last him for some time to come. He went out ou the river In hi dinghy with a load of chain for some purpose, and the boat being leaky and the chains unduly heavy for it. it sank with him, well out In the stream Urxoii swam around for a while waiting for the boat to rise again, as It had turned over in it descent, and by every law of gravitation should have come up avain, but the chain caught and held It, in some way, aud he was just exhausted when he realised he had nothing to hoie for from the dinghy. He then swam to some piling about 150 feet distant, and clung to the barnacles on them for pretty nearly half an hour, yelling with the regularity and unction of a fog horn in good working order. At last hit pre dicament wa discerned by Louis Blgsby, who was passing by in hi wagon, and he got boat and went out to the al moat exhausted man aud helped htm to shore and to hi home, where he soon recovered hi normal and hearty ton and temper. But It wa a narrow squeak, all the tame; and at he says "the bar nactes on those pile had a good deal to do with hi subsequent salvation, as they gave him the only hand-hold be could maintain." New Business Relations: It was announced last evening that Al, Schroeder, the well known and popu lar clerk who served at the establish ment of Ro, Higgin ft Company, in this city, for the past six op seven years, has purchased an Interest In the Acme Grocery Company, on Commercial street, and will be found there, hence forth, making the best use of his In timate and reliable knowledge of the business. The Acme people are to be congratulated as well as Mr, Schroeder, and the clientelle of the house. Cause of Libeling The cause of the libeling of the steam ship Mackinaw, and her being held here by a deputy United State marshal, was the filing of two suits for 15000 each by Teresa Rinehart, and Annie Colons, both of Portland, who claim that they were injured in an accident last Sunday in which the steamship and the Alblna ferry figured. Carelessness on the part of the officer and crew of the steamship is charged. Both ladle tuffered broken limb and other injuries.
