THE OREGON APPLE. ,
What the ruby ia to Burmab, the pearl
to Ceylon, the diamond to Natal, gold to
fiht Caucasus, the great, red, flower
t flavored apple is to Oregon! Nowhere
' else in the favored realm of distinctive
.production does thia, fruity staple grow
aa it does in ita valley-lair here.
Unblemished, succulent, crisp, ample
In bulk, exquisite in color, it challenge!
n teiiow toe worm over to meet ks at
tributes of hue, taste and size, and
stands unrivalled in all nature's suc
cessful attempts to do the real artistic
thing So popular is it out here there
would be no surprise manifested if it
were made a "oat currency" for the
term of "stringency" now runing It
already stands for 17,000,000 of good
hioney ia Oregon and is regarded as a
bankable asset everywhere.
There are some things ia this world
that furnish forth their excellence and
.Value upon mere sight, and the Oregon
, apple Is in this class, along with the
aight-draft, the bill of exchange and
other pot-credits, we all know of; and
there are few of them that yield more
' lands of gratification than this superb
ire :'u: -i ', '".!JI
The wonder of this staple is that it
geta finer year by year, a fact that
makes people marvel since it cannot be
readily eoncieved; no one seems to real
ize the possibility of improvement, yet
history confirms it, as doea the world's
market reports.

OIL WANTED I
Clatsop needs oil, and gas, along with
other things that make life smoother
and easier and less grating. We believe
she haa both these commodities in vast
quantities and trust the present well
directed search for them will be success
ful; since such a discovery would miti
gate the money-pressure above ground.
1 A few hundred thousands barrels of
fuel oil per day just for a starter, with
millions to follow,, would smooth the
way of business here notably and counter-act
the sense of uneasiness prevalent
in our commercial sphere.
There is nothing fictitious about a
flowing well of oil or a belching bore
of gas. Both are staples, and both have
a waiting market at their vents. They
are worth going after, and once tapped
are profit yielders. If we have not any-
thing of the sort, that should be known
also, once for all, so we can discount
(the signs and go about our other busi
nesses (without feeling we are neglecting
a standard resource.
We want to see the present effort
pushed to an absolute demonstration of
success or failure and the whole matter
laid for all time to come, either as a
patent item of wealth and commercial
development or as an exploded theory
that may be rationally abandoned.

THE PINKERTON.
Whenever one read of the great Pink
erton agency for ' the detection and
punishment of crime, there is the ever
present note of dread, of hatred, of
vengefulness, on the part of the people
lying for the time, under the stress of
the agency's manipulation; . and this m
especially true wherever organized labor
has come in legal conflict with the de
tective bureaus such as this. .
It is the simplest of all truths that
the man or organization abiding within
the lawi has nothing to fear from the
Pinkertons noji any other "man-catching"
outfit. The trouble is that some
men will not proceed along prescribed
and acceptable courses for the justifica
tion they are after and are entitled to;
they must reeort to devloua and forbid
den line and trek justice where justice
cannot possibly abide, V ; ,
There are group of organised labor
that wer come into any sort of con
tact 'With the police function of the
country, public or private, and it is be
cause they go about their work under
the processes made and provided for
them 1 for all other men. While
others cannot assert themselves, in
court, nor out of it, without Inviting
the instant attention of every agency
for the repression of crime, including the
Pinkerton. The Pinkerton may haw
their bad elements as well as other
organisations, but neither would be
effective it the law was given the ob
servance that is its due. (
Organized labor in this country I
powerful enough to exact anything that
rightfully belongs to it if it moved with
the circumspection that wins, rather
than with the irresponsible and aggres
sive action tbat invites a barrier-first
and defeat afterward. It has yet to
learn it realtive potency in the scheme
of human affairs in its dealing with the
law, just a it ha learned the lesson
of the poll.

NBW YORK, Nov. 12.-Speklg at
th annual ronfvreuce of local appraiser,
in session here, Assistant Secretary of
the Treasury James B. Reynold, just
back from a special tariff Inquiry in
Europe, took the opportunity to clear
up for the benefit of the appraiser a
great deal of th existing niUundep-
standing about the German agreement.
Mr. Reynolds made a clear and un
equivocal statement as to what was ex
pected of the officer in making ap
praisements under this treaty and lie
took particular paint to bring out the
fact tbat the agreement applk to
other countries a well a to Germany.
This i the first pronouncement front a
high official, sourVe at to an opinion
which ha long prevailed in custom
circles namely, that since Uie United
States cannot grant to one country com
raercial privilege which I denied
another, no other document outside of
the German agreement is necessary
secure to France, Austria, or any other
country the me concession a to
export, price, etc, that hav been grant
ed to Germany.
Hcsules the official expression of opin
ion to the appraiser Mr. Reynolds
in an interview later said the adminit
tration had always regarded th treaty
at nothing more or less than an inter
pretation of the custom administrative
act; and that th view accepted in om
quarter that the agreement is a series
of special concessions, to Germany, is
entirely erroneous. Moreover, the ad
ministration fully intended that the one
agreement should stand for all coun
tries.
