stated that the board of police commis
sioners were determined to control the
police denartment. and that at least the
chairman of the board would e to it
that the police oflkers would do as they
wera told. No insubordinatlou would be
tolerated, and when officers refused to
obey orders, a summary dismissal would
follow. The commission, he stated, was
amenable only to the taxpayers and
were responsible for the actions or we
noli. department, to the people only.

has no cause for fault finding, in this
respect, as that is what the police Ul

came in from San Francisco, !n ballast,
yesterday morning and went up stream
to loaJ grab for Europe.
The American steamer Lyra from
Seattle came up stream last evening and
anchored opposite the O. R. & N. dock.
She will load lumber for eastern ports.
The steamer City of Panama is due
today from San rrancisco with passen
gers and freight.
The schooner Glcndale which arrived
from San Pedro yesterday reports hav
ing spoken the German ship Siam about
50 miles off Cape Blanco. The Glcndale
will load lumber at Tongue Point.
The American bark Homeward! Bound
arrived from Newcastle, Australia, with
coal andl went up stream yesterday.
The eteam schooner Thos. L. Wand
arrived from Sun Francisco yesterday
and will load lumber for San Pedro.
The .Atlas arrived with a cargo of oil
and two barges in tow yesterday, an
went up stream in the afternoon.
The steamer Telegraph will make her
last trip to Portland today, and upon
reaching there she will go into winter
quarters. She will be placed on the As
toria-Portknd run nxt spring. , ,
The French bark La Pilier will arrive
today, bound for Sharpness, England
with 118,308 bushels of barley, valued at
$83,000, and 18,723 bushels of wheat,
valued at $18,000. Captain David eays
he will ship the men needed to fill out
the crew this afternoon.
