Clint, of Gray's River, is vis iting in the city with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Donnerberg. Cards have been issued by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Elmore announcing the late of the marriage of their daughter, Bosan Hurd, to Mr. Frits Howard Hara 'ton on October 28, at the First Metho dist Church. A very pleasant reception party was given on Friday night to Miss AlyJane Meehan, of Portland, by Misses Gertie and Alice Kearney, of this city. The party was given at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. P. Kearney at 75 Exchange street and was a very enjoyable affair, Vocal aud instrumental musio and games were enjoyed, and the refreshments which were furnished by well known caterer were of a pleasing variety. Miss Median will remain in Astoria for & few weeks and thoroughly enjoyed her greet ing. .". Coffman, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and was attended by many ifriends of the contracting parties. (PitfEST LAKE, Idaho, Oct. 12. A and of Kalispel Indians with Chief An tilee at their head, have visited Priest Lake. in. the fall of every year for many years. They come at the time whitefish are "running" and by trapping several creeks tributary to the lake always man age to carry out a goodly supply of fish lor the winter. Recently a law has been passed pro hibiting the catching of whitefish by any ether means that those afforded by the use of hook and line. Since the Indians fceretofore have come with the sole pur pose of trapping fish, their presence now is the subject of much speculation and their first move is watched with much interest. Should they break this law ar rests will follow and a test case will la-made.' Tbe new boathouse for the 25-foot gasoline launch which the government will place at the disposal of the forest angers and their officers is nearly com pleted. The launch is due to arrive some time this mornth. The arrival of the launch is looked forward to with great anticipation, as heretofore a rowboat or sailboat has been the only means of transportation to the scene of the fires. TORPEDO FLEET FOR COAST. Bany Small Fighters Will be About San Francisco. , WASHINGTON,' Oct. 12 Another war ship division will be created at San (Francisco next spring or sooner, con sisting of torpedo-boats, torpedo-boat de stroyers and submarines. Secretary ifetcalf said today that it had not been decided what officer would be elevated toi command this flotilla. It will be re nferced by six torpedo-boat destroyers, .eeraprfeing a second torpedo flotilla, ommanded by Lieutenant Hutch L Cone, which arrived today at Norfolk to eb docked and repaired preparatory to beginning their journej to the Pacific Ceast as the advance guard of the At Ikntie battleship fleet. These vessels, it was, stated' definitely at the Navy De jcprftnent today, are now under orders to proceed on their journey from Hampton- Roads on December 1st. Previous or : tfers as to the date of the departure of tie battleship fleet also have been amended, directing that Adniiral Evans shall sail out in squadron formation with his sixteen ships on December 15th. Admiral Sebree left today for Norfolk to the command of the special service sqadron Washington and Tennessee, with which he will sail on Saturday. SAYS MILLS POLLUTE WATER. New Jersey's Attorney-General Begins Action Against Somerville Plant SOMERVILLE, N. J., Oct. .-Attorney-General Robert H. McCarter, on be half of the state board of health, has brought suit in the New Jersey court of chancery against the Somerville Woolen Mills, owned and operated by Bacon & Co., woolen dealers of 92 Franklin street, New York, He has asked to have the court issue an injunction against the company restraining it from polluting Chambers Brook, a tributary of the Raritan River. The Somerville Woolen Mills, has a sourcing mill at Pluckemin, six miles from here, and uses the water of the brook for cleansing its wool The bill charges that the company al lows dye stuffs and washings from the wool to discharge into the brook, and alleges that such discharges tend to cor rupt and impair the water of the Rari tan River to the detriment of the in habitants of the towns of Somerville and Raritan. The state sewer commissioner has re cently ordered the towns of Somerville, Raritan and Bound Brook to take their sewer systems from the Raritan before January 1, 1912.
