Senator Wright, who was Senator Si hollleld't guest while in Astoria is enthusiastic over Astoria and the way he has been treated. Sena tor Cole is equully enthusiastic and at a result both enjoyed their visit very much. Veterday at Seaside considerable merriment was created by an assault at armlength between Senator 8chol Held and Wright. Roth these gentlemen are pretty well up in avordupoit but Wright tips the tcules touiewhat in ex ecu of our Clatsop county solon. Sena tor Siholfleld undertook to give Senator W right a ducking and taking a mean advantage of hit guiMt endeavored to slew, him by a pedal extremity while partly Immersed. FAVOR FIXING UP ENGINES MAYOR WISE BELIEVES IT WOULD BE A GOOD MOVE TO REPAIR FIRE ENGINES IN CASE WATER MAINS GO WRONG. Mayor Wie it in fnvoi' of expending a littlo money on tha two fire engines possessed by Astoria liefore they lie come uelcs from rust and lack of use. For a good many years Astoria had those engines, which at present are useless beeaute they are out of repair. It is claimed by the mayor and the lire chief that they can lie put in good working condition by the expenditure of about .$."00 on each of them. - The engines coot about $4000 each and re what were formerly known as As toria No. 1 and Rescue No. 2. At pres ent they are In danger of going to pieces and leaving the city without any flro protection should anything happen to the water mains during a conflagra tion. "Astoria should have some means of producing a good stream of water in case anything happened to the hydrants ami pipes," snid Mayor Miso yesterday. "The purchasing of new engines at pres ent is out of the question but those we already have should not bo left to go to wreck and ruin simply for an expendi ture of $1000 for repairs. They will throw two powerful stream each if they are fixed up and used, so that they may not become rusty. While they are a little antique, still they would serve their purpose and that is all that is necessary. "If anything should happen to the water mains or the hydrants in the city, these two engines could do splendid work by furnishing water from the river. Without them the city would be helpless in the face of a conflagra tion and I believe it would be a good investment to have them put in shape." JOHN'S CRIPPLED TEAM PLAYS ON SUN DAY AND FAILURE TO BUNCH HITS WITH ERRORS LOOSES THE GAME. Sunday afternoon. St. Johns chased 6 across the rubber. Some of the returned Rohemiau are inclined to attribute the loss of the game to cotly errors. Jami son the first baseman, certainly threw in a couple that were costly but still at that these runs did not contribute to the los of the gome. When 16 of the team are found in the strike-out col umn tbe blame is with the stickers. The Bohemians could not bit Springer. Springer had all the necessary shoots speed to put the players irom beside .1st sea back ou the bench. They could . ""Iliit him. On the other hand the St. i oaiiers were aoie io ouucu me hits and took advantage of costly er rors. They were on their toes and took advantage of every opportunity. Cap tain Jackson' men need more practice. But in the matter of hits the Bohem ians were not so far behind. They con nected five times with Springer while St. Johns got but six'hits from PheitTer.
