V THE MOUNING ASTORIAN, ASTOIUA. OREGON. THURSDAY, AUGUST i, 1907. SENATOR FULTON IS IN THE CITY WILL HE HERE UNTIL THE LAT TER PAST OF AUGUST, THEN MAKES AN EXTENSIVE TRIP THROUGH THE STATE. United Stat Senator Fulton has re turned to hi borne in thi city and his familiar face was seen on our street yesterday. Senator Fulton look very well for a reported very sick man and stated to an Astorian reporter yesterday that he was not as ill aa he had been reported to be but was little worn at the time. He had a very pleasant trip through the southern and southeastern part of the stabs which be enjoyed. He will remain in Astoria until the latter part of this month and will go to Oor vallia to deliver an address on August 09 on the occasion of the school fair which will be held there. Soon after ward he will go to Crook county visit ing Prineville and the Bend and ls Chutes countries, lie will thou viu points in Sherman, Wheeler and Morrow counties. Following tbis he will make a trip through Willamette Valley and call in at Washington, lamniu, ito, Benton and Lincoln counties and late on will go to Coo Count-. When asked as to the appearance of the part of the country visited by him he stated that he ro""l everything looking well and prosperous. In Jackson county the fruit crop wry promising. The early crop is boun tiful and late crop will doubtless be as good. The Senator's itinerary will keep him pretty buav until the latter part of November when he will leave for Wash ington. He ask that a meeting be called to take place in St. Helena within a few days, mid that tha energetic cititcn of this city send representative to dis-cu- plans for the furtherance of the movement. Mr. Kussell, after looking over maps and plan provided for him, has decided that Judge Tieuehard'a plan of having the road run from Portland to Astoria by way of St. Helens, Pittsburg, MUt, Vesper, and Jewell U the most leasable. He has corresponded with men interested in the movement in Columbia county and the meeting to be held at St. Helens is for the purpose of completing plans for active work on the project. The citizens of Astoria owning auto mobile, and others Interested, are ask ed to co-operate in the building of 1 good automobile road, so that closer communication may be kept between the two cities by mean of the "buu wagon Mr. Whyte ha not made definite an swer as to a date tor the meeting, but will do so as he ha had a eoniereiiee with a committee appointed to look intb the good roads proposition. It is probable that the date for the meeting will be set for the latter part of this week or the earl- part of next week. Interest Being Aroused as to Lucky Girl for Queen of Regatta. Interest in the voting contest for the Queen of the Regatta is growing duily and it is e.xoected there will be a hot race before the polls close. Fifteen bat lot boxes have been placed in leading store throughout the city and the votes are beginning to appear in a lively man Kef. - The last vote will be cast on August 17 and it will not be known who is the luckv Oueen until that date. The votes will be counted each Saturday night and made nublic. so that the voters will a have some idea of who are the favorites, ACTRESS HAKES HIT. Crowds Turn Out to See Miss Roberts' Performance of "Camille." on "Camille" drew a larger house at the Astoria Theater last evening than the opening night and it is quite evi dent that Miss Ethel Roberts has made a bit by her clever, portrayal of the character. The audience received the play enthusiastically and Miss Roberts was applauded on numerous occasions, The play will run again tonight, and tomorrow night "A Western Gentle man" will be the attraction, This wi be given also on Saturday afternoon and night and on Sunday night. With a burst of old Norse songs accompanied by the music of clanking oars banked in solid rows, two ships will be fitted up iu the old style. On a large liarge descen hints of the old Vikings will be lined up ou one 01 tne largest, wnarvee ami greet the curious ships aa they come in This feature was decided upon by the local member of the Saengerfest socie ty. S. I Nanthrup, president of the organization, submitted the propol tion to tho Chamlier of Commerce last night and it was unanimously agreed that the innovation would be a big lrawiitu card. A sum of money was set aside to bear the expen-es of th project. Two large longboats will be secured ami fitted up to reemhle the ancient N'orso fighting ships. Eight or ten men on each side will handle huge sweeps to propel the boats, which will be decorat ed with shields on each side. At the bow a huge dragon head will be attach ed and the oarnien will be dressed in old Vikitijj costume. A leader of the iking, eiatl in armor. -with battleaxe, and extended wings Hy ing from his steel cap, will be upon the leek of each ship as commander. He will extend greetings to the leader rtl the singers upon the barge and will be made welcome and invited to take part iu the merrymaking and singing.
